Akamai Technologies is currently seeking a Principal Software Development Engineer in Test (Performance & Bare-Metal) to join their Compute team within the Akamai Connected Cloud. Akamai operates a distributed platform spanning cloud and edge infrastructure, delivering content, cybersecurity services, and cloud computing capabilities designed to support next-generation applications and AI workloads.
In this remote-based role, the engineer will direct the test strategy for hypervisor behavior, virtual machine performance, and fleet-level quality gates across the infrastructure-as-a-service platform. This position entails creating reproducible test environments utilizing containers to simulate bare-metal conditions, establishing automated performance benchmarks, and collaborating with site reliability engineering and product teams to define service level objectives.
This position requires extensive engineering background in testing, performance validation, and hypervisor platforms, along with deep knowledge of Linux fundamentals and systems-level debugging across x86 and ARM architectures. Qualified professionals will work within a remote environment supported by Akamai's FlexBase program, which provides flexibility in work location.
Responsibilities
- Define and oversee test strategies covering hypervisor operations, virtual machine performance, and fleet-level quality checks
- Mentor other engineers on statistical rigor and systems-level testing methodologies
- Build reproducible test environments using containers to emulate bare-metal virtual machine conditions and verify data integrity
- Create automated performance benchmarks featuring statistical baselines, regression gating, and change-point detection for CI/CD pipelines
- Partner with product and site reliability engineering teams to establish service level objective measurements and validate rollback and deployment safety
- Build test harnesses and performance analysis pipelines using Go, Python, and Perl
Requirements
- Have 12 years of experience in testing, including systems engineering, hypervisor platforms, and performance testing, or an equivalent combination
- Possess practical knowledge of KVM, QEMU, and libvirt internals, virtual machine exits, and cache or NUMA effects on performance
- Bring debugging experience across ARM and x86 architectures in both emulated and bare-metal environments to isolate root causes
- Demonstrate strong Linux fundamentals covering memory management, schedulers, storage architectures, block devices, and input/output subsystems
- Show capability in statistical thinking including experimental design, baseline analysis, variance control, and communication with stakeholders
- Demonstrate proficiency with Linux perf, VTune, eBPF, Bash, Jenkins, and SaltStack
