Smartsheet is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to work remotely from Bulgaria, reporting to an engineering leader based in the same country. For over two decades, the organization has provided work management software solutions and is currently integrating human teams with artificial intelligence agents to automate routine tasks and scale insights. In this position, the engineer will define future platform architecture, guide technical project designs, and direct cross-functional initiatives.
This opportunity is suited for a technical leader experienced in designing highly available distributed systems and mentoring senior engineering staff. The professional will collaborate with product management and business stakeholders, balancing market needs with technical constraints while championing reliability, security, and scalability standards for millions of global users.
Responsibilities
- Lead design and implementation of next-generation platform architecture to support global users
- Define architecture strategy and drive major technical decisions
- Review technical project designs and guide teams during design review presentations
- Manage cross-functional technical initiatives and coordinate large-scale project execution
- Mentor senior engineering personnel and promote engineering best practices across multiple teams
- Oversee deployment reviews for high-impact projects regarding performance and security
- Partner with product management and business stakeholders to align market demands with technical limits
- Advocate for operational excellence, system monitoring, testing, and reliability standards
Requirements
- Proven background in system architecture and designing scalable, high-availability systems using Python, Go, Java, C/C++, or SQL
- Deep knowledge of distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven architectures
- Experience leading large-scale architectural transformations across multiple teams
- Expertise in object-oriented design, web application development, and data structures
- Track record of mentoring senior engineers and fostering technical leadership
- Experience with cloud architectures, infrastructure at scale, and database optimization
- Familiarity with Agile and Scrum methodologies
- Legally eligible to work in Bulgaria on an ongoing basis
- Fluency in English
