Job Description
Elastic has an opening for a Principal Technical Writer in the United States, an on-site role. The post-holder will shape onboarding and 'Getting Started' material, converting it into a connected storyline that brings new users to their first real win. The writer works hand in hand with the Self-Service group and links field staff, product teams and documentation writers, with the goal of improving trial-to-paid conversion.
The job defines the narrative structure of the user journey, from initial setup through to adoption of advanced features, so that each touchpoint feels intentional. Roadmap changes are followed with product teams, friction in live deployments is gathered from field colleagues, and documentation output is kept high-quality. Onboarding experiences should be orderly, point out best practices, troubleshooting steps and next actions, and avoid tangled branching paths.
Progress is judged by user research, support tickets and telemetry showing where people get stuck. The writer revises content to reduce drop-off and speed up time to value. The docs group influences how products evolve, and writers are trusted with ownership of their work. Compensation is base salary without a variable element.
Applicants need seven or more years in relevant work, including documentation work or developer-facing positions, and a demonstrated history of shaping onboarding or user journeys. Leading across product, engineering and sales or field groups, with the ability to shape decisions, is required. Strong narrative craft for complex technology, and a data-driven approach that draws on analytics, UX research and support information, are needed. Experience inside large, spread-out organisations is valued, as is first-hand familiarity with self-service cloud products.
Responsibilities
- Set the onboarding content strategy and a unified narrative from first visit to live deployment
- Serve as the central liaison between product, field and documentation colleagues
- Shape structured onboarding routes that spotlight good practice, fixes and obvious next moves

- Experience in large, distributed organisations
- Hands-on familiarity with cloud self-serve offerings, from either side of the customer relationship
