Job Description

The Workforce Intelligence Lab (WIL) is looking for a professor-level researcher to act as Principal Investigator for a federal education research proposal. This is a project-based, part-time grant key personnel role rather than a salaried faculty position, and all work is contingent upon a successful award and final staffing approval with no guaranteed hours. The Workforce Intelligence Lab functions as a workforce research institute investigating how working conditions influence public program delivery, specifically targeting the education workforce through partnerships with school systems, universities, and education stakeholders.

The chosen Principal Investigator will help develop a federal proposal centered on understanding how preservice teacher education programs can recruit, prepare, and maintain preK-12 general and special education teachers. Responsibilities span research design, framing scholarly aspects, formulating research questions, establishing measurement and analysis plans alongside the WIL research team, and drafting critical proposal sections. If the proposal receives funding, the individual will direct the study, oversee results, and lead publications.

Responsibilities

  • Act as Principal Investigator to steer the scholarly framework and research design for the federal proposal
  • Formulate research questions focused on recruiting, preparing, and retaining general and special education teachers
  • Direct the methods, measurement, and analysis plan in collaboration with the workforce data and research team
  • Assist in locating appropriate teacher-preparation programs, school districts, and project partners
  • Draft and review core proposal sections including significance, personnel narrative, and research plan
  • Provide a CV, biosketch, and citable past research for submission
  • Direct the study, findings, and publication efforts alongside the project team if funding is secured

Requirements

  • Hold an earned doctorate such as an EdD or PhD, preferably within education, teacher education, or special education
  • Hold a current or equivalent former faculty appointment as an assistant, associate, or full professor
  • Demonstrate published or funded research history concerning teacher preparation, the special education workforce, or teacher retention
  • Commit part-time remote effort toward proposal development between October and December 2026

Qualifications

  • Prior experience serving as a Principal Investigator, co-PI, or key personnel on IES or other federal research grants
  • Background working with preK-12 district partners or general and special education teacher-preparation programs
  • Expertise in quantitative, mixed-methods, or causal research design
