Benesch seeks a remote Railroad Grade Crossing – Designer I for its Rail Division. In this position, the professional will support traffic design and transportation engineering tasks for various roadway and infrastructure projects, focusing on rail grade crossings, traffic signal preemption, and associated transport improvements.
The firm operates as a multi-disciplined planning, engineering, and professional services company dedicated to enhancing community infrastructure across the country. The Railroad Grade Crossing team handles safe crossing designs for both public agencies and private clients.

Responsibilities
- Conduct traffic operations and safety analyses for rail grade crossings and related roadway projects
- Prepare preliminary and final design plans, specifications, and engineering calculations
- Coordinate the drafting of project deliverables while ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal standards
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and mentor junior engineers
- Build and maintain client relationships with local and state transportation agencies
- Represent the firm at industry and professional events
Requirements
- Between zero and three years of experience in rail or traffic engineering, grade crossing design, or related transportation work
- Familiarity working alongside public agencies and municipalities
- Strong knowledge of traffic operations, signal design, safety analyses, and roadway design
- Proficiency with CADD, Synchro, GIS, and other traffic modeling or design software
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage project deliverables, and mentor staff
Qualifications
- B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline
- State Department of Transportation experience
