Job Description
Abacus Insights operates as a data and artificial intelligence platform for payer intelligence, helping health plans unify healthcare data to improve outcomes, decrease waste, and streamline care and cost decisions. Backed by major investors, the organization focuses on secure data foundations that drive modern automation and artificial intelligence workflows.
The company seeks a Senior AI Security Engineer to partner directly with engineering teams, technical leads, product managers, and customer delivery groups. In this technical position, you will design, build, and secure artificial intelligence applications and shared platform capabilities within a regulated healthcare context. Your daily scope spans architecture reviews, threat modeling, Python implementation, automation, and the establishment of secure paved roads for citizen developers. You will address risks such as prompt injection, excessive agency, and data leakage across cloud, network, and identity layers.
This role is designed for a technically proficient specialist who can balance rapid product delivery with rigorous security engineering principles. Candidates must be available to work US Eastern Time hours from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, from the designated location.
Responsibilities
- Partner with senior artificial intelligence engineers, technical leads, and product teams across the full development lifecycle to design and build secure AI applications and platform capabilities.
- Contribute production-quality Python code, security automation, reference implementations, and policy-as-code components.
- Implement security patterns covering identity, authentication, authorization, secrets management, tenant isolation, and audit logging.
- Perform collaborative architecture reviews and threat modeling to address risks like prompt injection, insecure tool use, and sensitive-data disclosure.
- Build automated security controls into GitLab CI/CD pipelines, including static analysis, software composition analysis, and secrets detection.
- Design private-by-default cloud infrastructure using Terraform, multi-account AWS architecture, and private network connectivity.
- Secure graph and vector databases by establishing access tiers and ensuring retrieval occurs exclusively through governed Model Context Protocol tools.
- Create and maintain secure paved-road templates and administer development environments for citizen-developed applications.
- Collaborate with privacy, legal, and compliance teams to ensure adherence to frameworks such as HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2, and GDPR.
- Represent the organization in client-facing architecture and security discussions regarding data protection and auditability.
Requirements
- Minimum of five years of professional background in software engineering, security engineering, platform engineering, DevSecOps, or application security.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience designing, building, deploying, or securing production-level artificial intelligence applications involving agents, Model Context Protocol, retrieval-augmented generation, or AI security.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including proficiency in Python, API security, testing, code review, automation, and configuration management.
- Hands-on expertise with cloud security architecture, including AWS multi-account organization design, VPC networking, PrivateLink, Key Management Service, and centralized logging.
- Infrastructure as code experience using Terraform, policy scanning tools, and OIDC-based deployment roles.
- Practical knowledge of graph and vector data stores, role-based access control, and backup operations.
- Familiarity with building and securing Model Context Protocol servers and gateways, remote authentication, and enterprise single sign-on.
- Working knowledge of secure software development lifecycle practices, threat modeling, and regulatory frameworks like HIPAA, SOC 2, and ISO 27001.
- Availability to work US Eastern Time core hours from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity, or a closely related discipline.
- Prior experience building AI agents, retrieval-augmented generation applications, model gateways, or evaluation harnesses.
- Familiarity with Databricks and Mosaic AI Gateway.
- Experience working with Snowflake, vector databases, or large-scale healthcare data platforms.
- Exposure to enterprise AI services such as Claude, Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, or Gemini.
