Movable Ink is seeking a Senior Backend Developer, AI Systems to join their team remotely. The company builds data-driven content generation and AI decisioning solutions utilized by major global brands to improve marketing workflows and revenue generation. Headquartered in New York City with roughly 600 personnel, Movable Ink operates internationally across North America, Central America, Europe, Australia, and Japan.
In this role, the selected candidate will guide the transformation of the core recommendations pipeline into a distributed architecture. This position involves designing fault-tolerant backend services, optimizing performance, collaborating with machine learning engineers, and managing components from design through incident response. The developer will also promote engineering best practices and mentor team members.
This opportunity is suited for a software engineer with significant background in distributed systems who wants to impact production environments bridging systems engineering and machine learning.
Responsibilities
- Lead the transition of the core recommendations pipeline to a modern distributed architecture while preserving production stability
- Design, construct, and operate fault-tolerant backend services supporting personalization at scale, including send-time optimization and frequency capping
- Detect and fix performance bottlenecks, scaling constraints, and reliability risks across the system
- Partner with machine learning engineers and product stakeholders to create technical designs with clear paths to production
- Manage key system components end-to-end through architecture, deployment, monitoring, and incident response
- Advocate for engineering standards surrounding code quality, observability, system design, testing, and operational excellence
- Mentor fellow engineers and support a collaborative team culture focused on technical rigor
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience focusing on distributed systems
- Demonstrated background in building and running large-scale, highly available, concurrent, and fault-tolerant distributed systems
- Strong software engineering skills covering system design, unit testing, git, code reviews, and CI/CD
- Strong foundation in Python
- Practical knowledge of distributed systems fundamentals such as consensus, partitioning, replication, back-pressure, idempotency, and failure handling
- Experience working with cloud providers such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
- Familiarity with microservice and distributed technologies including Kubernetes, Kafka, and gRPC
- Knowledge of Software Development Lifecycle practices like continuous integration and automated deployment using Docker, Kubernetes, and GitHub Actions
- Strong technical leadership and problem-solving abilities
Qualifications
- Experience with distributed data processing frameworks such as Apache Spark, Apache Flink, and Apache Beam
- Hands-on experience with Apache Spark
