The organization is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the AI Engineering organization focusing on the Chat Engine within the Duo Chat group. This position centers on building natural-language and agentic interfaces for the platform, developing agentic flows utilizing Python and LangGraph inside the Duo Workflow Service, and connecting these systems with the GitLab Rails monolith. The role suits an experienced engineer who can own complex backend features from inception to completion, integrate generative artificial intelligence models, and handle multi-agent orchestration.
Professionals in this role will collaborate with product managers, user experience designers, frontend developers, and artificial intelligence specialists while participating in Tier two on-call rotations to resolve production issues. The position requires strong proficiency in backend Python development along with familiarity or a willingness to learn Ruby on Rails.
Responsibilities
- Design and build flow components and agentic flows in the Flow Registry using Python and LangGraph within the Duo Workflow Service
- Develop, ship, and maintain backend features for GitLab Duo Chat across the Python Duo Workflow Service and the GitLab Rails monolith
- Integrate new generative artificial intelligence models, providers, tools, and multi-agent orchestration patterns into Duo Chat
- Design, implement, and review GraphQL and REST application programming interfaces and related monolith logic
- Improve debugging, observability, and test coverage using pytest, RSpec, and related frameworks
- Collaborate with Product, UX, frontend, and AI specialists to refine requirements and deliver improvements
- Document standards, patterns, and learnings with other engineers
- Participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations to troubleshoot production issues, conduct root cause analysis, and strengthen system resiliency
Requirements
- Significant experience building and maintaining production Python backends, including APIs, data models, and asynchronous or long-running workloads
- Practical experience designing and shipping AI-powered, agentic backend features such as large language model integration, tool or function calling, and multi-agent orchestration
- Working proficiency in Ruby on Rails or a strong willingness to learn it
- Proficiency designing or extending REST or GraphQL APIs with focus on scalability, maintainability, and backward compatibility
- Strong Structured Query Language skills and familiarity with relational databases like PostgreSQL
- Ability to diagnose and prevent performance and reliability problems at scale
