Workstate invites experienced mainframe professionals to apply for the Senior COBOL Developer (z/OS) position for an 18-month modernization initiative. In this fully remote role, the contractor will transform an outdated RPG II codebase into COBOL on IBM z/OS to prepare the architecture for a future cloud migration to Google Cloud Platform utilizing the Raincode rehosting platform. This opportunity suits analytical engineers who excel at data tasks, client collaboration, and delivering exceptional technical outcomes.

Workstate engages consultants capable of energizing client teams while executing hands-on technical deliverables and planning future stages. The organization values decisive professionals dedicated to supporting client objectives and maintaining high engineering standards. Eligible applicants must reside in Colombia or Argentina and possess valid work authorization for their country of residence. Candidates should also be comfortable operating in Agile environments alongside client migration teams and documenting technical decisions and data dependencies.

Responsibilities

  • Translate legacy RPG II programs into organized and maintainable COBOL on z/OS
  • Review existing program logic, data flows, and file layouts to guarantee identical functional behavior in converted code
  • Build and support JCL, batch job streams, and associated utilities
  • Create and optimize DB2 for z/OS SQL alongside working with sequential datasets and VSAM
  • Participate in unit, regression, and parallel testing phases, performing data reconciliation between legacy and converted results
  • Prepare data and code for rehosting on Google Cloud Platform using the Raincode runtime and compiler
  • Maintain documentation for converted programs, technical decisions, and data dependencies
  • Collaborate with client migration and technical personnel within an Agile framework

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of professional COBOL development experience on IBM z/OS mainframes
  • Residency in Colombia or Argentina with valid local work authorization
  • B2 level or higher English language proficiency for written and verbal professional communication

Qualifications

  • Strong database and SQL skills, particularly regarding DB2 for z/OS query tuning, embedded SQL, and data modeling
  • Proficiency with TSO/ISPF, JCL, and batch processing
  • Experience with VSAM, GDGs, and QSAM sequential files
  • Familiarity with mainframe utilities like IDCAMS and DFSORT or SYNCSORT
  • Background in CICS
  • Involvement in legacy modernization, code conversion, or mainframe migration projects
  • Knowledge of mainframe emulation or rehosting platforms such as Raincode or Micro Focus/Rocket Enterprise Server
  • Experience with change management and source control software including Git, ChangeMan, or Endevor
  • Background in parallel-run testing, data validation, and reconciliation
  • Prior experience with RPG II or alternative IBM midrange languages
