Job Description

Mutt Data is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to lead the architecture, design, and implementation of a next-generation clinical trial software platform built on Databricks. This position bridges software engineering and large-scale data handling by collaborating directly with frontend developers, software architects, clinical research professionals, and quality validation teams. The employer builds machine learning systems, custom AI solutions, data infrastructures, and data products that help organizations solve complex challenges.

This role suits an ownership-driven engineer who can build robust, compliant, and scalable data solutions within regulated environments. Responsibilities include designing enterprise data pipelines, lakehouse storage layers, and data models using PySpark, Spark SQL, and Delta Lake. The selected candidate will build API-driven endpoints, ingest electronic data capture outputs, and connect legacy clinical systems into a unified architecture while ensuring compliance with stringent healthcare data regulations. Qualified candidates bring hands-on production experience with Databricks and a strong understanding of clinical data standards and regulatory frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and optimize enterprise data pipelines, lakehouse storage layers, and data models using Databricks to support custom clinical application backends.
  • Partner with frontend developers, software architects, and clinical research personnel to create API endpoints, data ingestion engines, and query layers for proprietary clinical software.
  • Construct standards-compliant data structures for electronic data capture outputs, audit trails, device telemetry, and patient-reported outcomes to facilitate rapid querying and analytics.
  • Work alongside Clinical QA and Validation teams to verify that databases, pipelines, and repositories meet GxP, 21 CFR Part 11, HIPAA, and GDPR standards.
  • Execute real-time and batch ingestion jobs connecting legacy clinical systems, central laboratories, electronic health records, and wearable devices into a unified Databricks Lakehouse architecture.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize Spark jobs, Delta Lake tables, and query execution times for high-throughput clinical workflows.

Requirements

  • Four or more years of hands-on experience building production data pipelines and lakehouse architectures utilizing Databricks, Delta Lake, and Apache Spark.
  • Demonstrated background in building, extending, or maintaining custom software applications for clinical trials.
  • Deep familiarity with clinical data standards and regulatory environments including CDISC, 21 CFR Part 11, GxP validation, and ICH-GCP guidelines.
  • Strong proficiency in relational schema design, dimensional modeling, and unstructured data handling within Delta Lake environments.
  • Working knowledge of Python, SQL, RESTful API integrations, CI/CD pipelines, Git, and automated testing frameworks.
  • Cloud environment experience with a preference for AWS, alongside openness to Azure or GCP.
  • Advanced English proficiency for discussing technical requirements and solutions with clients in the United States.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Bioinformatics, or a related quantitative field.
  • Experience utilizing Databricks Workflows, Delta Live Tables, and Unity Catalog governance.
  • Background working inside a validated system environment involving Computer System Validation.
