FAIRTIQ is expanding its engineering organization and seeks a Senior Data Platform Engineer to advance its data infrastructure. Handling more than one million monthly active users and processing millions of public transport trips, FAIRTIQ relies on robust data to determine passenger fares, distribute revenue to operators, and enhance transit networks. Operating remotely and sitting within the Platform group, this position focuses on creating self-service data capabilities rather than maintaining legacy systems. The incumbent will transition the company away from older data infrastructure while designing ingestion, storage, transformation, and access layers. This opportunity suits professionals who treat data as a product, prioritize data quality and cost control, and want to expand their expertise into broader cloud platform engineering. Responsibilities
- Advance the development of the company data platform for ingestion, storage, transformation, and access as a self-service product
- Oversee the migration away from legacy data infrastructure and decommission the older platform
- Deliver both batch and streaming platform capabilities
- Establish tools for data quality, freshness, and lineage equipped with active monitoring and alerts
- Administer data infrastructure via code using current continuous integration, continuous delivery, and GitOps workflows
- Incorporate data governance mechanisms including retention policies, access controls, pseudonymisation, and audit trails for GDPR and operator contracts
- Enhance system performance, cost efficiency, and resilience
- Expand data platform capabilities throughout the squad via documentation, pairing sessions, and dojo workshops
- Participate in squad responsibilities beyond data, incident response, and postmortems
- Partner with backend, mobile, and analytics colleagues to align platform solutions with engineering needs
Requirements
- At least 5 years of professional background as a Data Engineer or Data Platform Engineer
- Proficiency in Python for writing clean, tested code
- Familiarity with cloud computing platforms, particularly AWS and associated data services
- Hands-on practice with pipeline orchestration and data transformation frameworks
- Streaming expertise involving Kafka, covering ordering, delivery guarantees, and schema evolution
- Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform
- Knowledge of data protection regulations like GDPR and their application to platform architecture
- Proactive, communicative, and collaborative approach across disciplines
- Fluent English communication skills
- Residency within the European Union
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
- Container orchestration experience using Kubernetes
- Familiarity with open table formats like Iceberg or production LakeHouse architectures
- Background in supporting machine learning or artificial intelligence workloads including feature pipelines, training data, and model monitoring
- Experience within regulated, financial, or mobility industries requiring auditable correctness
- Prior practice in making a data platform self-service for other engineers
