Job Description
Canonical is recruiting a Senior Design Manager who will run its Infrastructure Design team. The post is full-time and remote, based in EMEA. The team is responsible for products that support building cloud platforms and for the channels through which software is packaged and shipped, and the manager will help make that delivery more secure.
The manager combines experience leading designers with a real grasp of a technical field. That lets the manager coach designers who create tooling for developers and cloud engineers. The manager then steers that work toward concrete results. Clear communication with product and engineering stakeholders, along with careful listening to the team, is central.
Meeting deadlines against the roadmap is part of the role. The manager checks the quality of the team's output, supports each designer's career growth, and works with stakeholders, particularly the engineering organization, to define and confirm what success looks like. The stated aim is steady quality gains and real development for each person.
The manager also refines how work flows, including external production partners and collaboration with web engineering. Design systems and guidelines are kept current so that quality stays consistent and output becomes more efficient. Coordination with the wider design leadership group, team gatherings that show off work, and outreach to the open source community to make the team's work visible are included too.
Candidates should bring a portfolio that demonstrates excellent UX work and genuine technical savvy, along with outstanding academic achievements in design or a related behavioral discipline. End-to-end experience, from discovering user needs through validation and into implementation guidance, is expected. The post also calls for leading people who work with technical stakeholders, plus a grasp of quantitative optimization, and a sensible balance between consistency and experimentation. Travel up to four times annually for internal gatherings is part of the job.
