Zuma is hiring a Senior Engineer for a remote position to help build agentic AI technology for the rental market. Backed by investors such as Andreessen Horowitz and Y Combinator, Zuma aims to streamline operations for property managers across the United States and Canada. This role is suited for an experienced backend-focused engineer who thrives in an early-stage startup environment with high ownership and evolving requirements.
As part of the founding team, this role involves shaping engineering culture and core system architecture. Responsibilities include leading critical system rewrites, optimizing data storage, building deployment pipelines, and managing cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code. Candidates must be comfortable collaborating directly with customers, dealing with legacy code, and working through demanding schedules that may require extended hours and occasional travel.

Responsibilities
- Lead system rewrites to transition architecture into a scalable foundation
- Design and optimize data storage systems for customer and AI demands
- Build deployment pipelines for automated releases of AI products
- Manage cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code
- Establish engineering standards including observability and incident response
- Implement analytics and monitoring for AI solutions and system performance
- Mentor engineers on infrastructure, scalability, and AI product development
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field
- At least 3 years of experience building production-grade software systems with a focus on scalability and reliability
- Expertise in backend development including API design, cloud services, and system architecture
- Experience with cloud infrastructure and deploying production systems using Infrastructure as Code
- Hands-on database design, performance tuning, and scaling experience
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and DevOps practices
Qualifications
- Experience with React and TypeScript on the frontend
- Exposure to LLM-based systems, AI infrastructure, or agentic AI workflows
