Job Description
BlackSky supplies real-time insight from a space-based platform, combining satellite pictures, automated analysis and fast, repeated surveillance of locations. Clients range from partner nations' military and intelligence bodies to private companies. The Senior Infrastructure Engineer joins the Platform team, which builds a global intelligence platform for customers.
The position plans, constructs and operates systems that carry client workloads on public cloud, in private data centers, or in isolated, offline networks. Core tasks involve AWS, Kubernetes platforms (EKS, RKE2, OpenShift 4), and GitOps pipelines driven by Argo CD. Packaging complete application stacks for isolated networks, writing Terraform, and building CI/CD pipelines that carry artifacts from development into restricted production and continuity environments are all part of the job.
Day-to-day operations cover monitors, notifications, log collection, playbooks, incident handling and capacity work, along with shared services like certificates, secrets, registries, storage and telemetry. Reporting line: the Manager, Infrastructure. Offices are in Herndon, Virginia and Seattle, Washington, and remote candidates are considered in certain states.
Applicants should bring five-plus years across infrastructure, platform, DevOps or SRE roles, three of them keeping Kubernetes running in live environments. The posting notes ITAR export controls, so candidates must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, protected individuals, or eligible for the approvals issued by the State Department. The Seattle salary range is $135,000 to $150,000 per year.
Responsibilities
- Design and run AWS infrastructure, covering networking, compute, storage, IAM and EKS, along with hybrid links to on-premises and isolated networks
- Operate production Kubernetes clusters on EKS, RKE2 or OpenShift 4, handling upgrades, capacity, networking and day-two work
- Own GitOps delivery with Argo CD, including app-of-apps layouts, sync policies, drift detection and staged rollouts
- Write, version and maintain Helm charts with consistent values and templates across environments
- Package images, charts and manifests with Zarf or similar tools for air-gapped installs
- Manage infrastructure and platform settings as code using Terraform, Helm and Kustomize
- Construct and secure CI/CD pipelines that deliver build outputs into restricted production and continuity sites
- Provide shared platform services such as certificate management, secrets, registries, storage and observability
- Establish norms for observability, notifications, playbooks, incident management and spending
Requirements
- Five or more years across infrastructure, platform, DevOps or SRE, including three years operating production Kubernetes
- Undergraduate credential in a related discipline or the equivalent in experience
- Solid practical AWS background spanning networks, compute, storage and identity, plus hybrid links
- Operating experience running production clusters on EKS, RKE2 or OpenShift versions
- Practice with GitOps on Argo CD or Flux, the core delivery approach
- Helm chart authoring and solid Kubernetes fundamentals, covering workloads, networking, RBAC, storage and CRDs
- Experience deploying and managing workloads through operators and custom resources
- Competence codifying infrastructure, Terraform preferred
- Linux administration and scripting in Bash, plus Python or Go
- Experience with hardened, minimal base images and supply-chain security
- Experience watching live systems via Prometheus and Grafana dashboards
- Clear communication and the ability to own a platform component through its full life
Qualifications
- Comfort moving across several managed Kubernetes platforms
- Experience running Kubernetes at the edge or in resource-constrained settings, such as k3s
- Work delivering to offline networks using Zarf, mirrored images and private registries
- Container and image scanning with Trivy, Grype, Clair or similar tools
- Secrets management and PKI or certificate automation experience
- Persistent storage at scale, such as Ceph or EBS and EFS storage classes
- OpenTelemetry instrumentation and collector experience
