Quora is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer for its ranking work. The position is remote and belongs to the distribution team, which builds recommendation systems for the feed, notifications and digest emails. Quora calls itself a remote-first company and runs a knowledge-sharing site alongside Poe, a workspace where people run several AI agents.
The engineer is responsible for the second-stage ranker that powers feed and digest, and creates methods that other developers will extend. Responsibilities span the whole machine learning lifecycle, including data pipelines, candidate retrieval, feature design, model training and deployment into production. The person also looks for fresh places where machine learning can improve the product.
Applicants need at least three years of professional work on recommendation or ranking models, a firm grounding in the mathematics of learning algorithms, and experience delivering complete learning systems. Candidates should hold a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree in a technical field such as computer science or engineering. Availability during Quora's coordination window, weekdays from 9am to 3pm Pacific, is required.
Strong candidates bring more than five years of Python or C++ and exposure to generative recommendation, sequence modeling of user behavior, transformer architectures, or leading large projects with many engineers. Quora is accepting applications on a rolling basis to fill a vacancy.
The posted base range for U.S. applicants is 189,507 to 274,604 USD, with equity and benefits on top. Responsibilities
- Strengthen current ranking models through solid coding and machine learning work
- Take charge of entire machine learning systems, from data to production
- Spot new areas of the product where machine learning could help
- Work alongside other machine learning engineers to build algorithms and systems in an efficient way
Requirements
- Available during weekday coordination hours, 9am to 3pm Pacific
- Three-plus years on recommendation or ranking models
- Sound grasp of the math underlying machine learning methods
- Track record of building complete machine learning systems from start to finish
- Good communication and interpersonal ability
- Degree at bachelor's, master's or PhD level in a technical field like computer science
Qualifications
- Five-plus years writing Python or C++
- Experience with generative recommendation systems
- Background in modeling user sequences, transformer models or long-sequence techniques for ranking
- Experience leading large, multi-engineer efforts
