Job Description
Mattermost sells a collaboration and workflow platform to customers in sensitive government and infrastructure sectors. Deployments can sit on premises or in private clouds, with clients on web, desktop and mobile. The company works remote-first, publishes its code openly, and presents its mission as keeping essential missions communicating securely.
This Senior Mobile Engineer post owns the mobile app used by teams in sensitive government and infrastructure sectors. The codebase is largely React Native and TypeScript, with native iOS and Android layers beneath. Field users can lose signal entirely, face contested links or work on thin bandwidth, so the app must keep working under those conditions. Early priorities are dependability and speed, and later the engineer helps shape the next generation of cross-platform architecture.
The job reaches into both the shared code and the native layer. Duties include designing for degraded networks, protecting data as connections drop and resume, and taking responsibility for stability metrics drawn from telemetry. The engineer also measures and tunes launch time, network calls, storage, drawing performance, memory and battery consumption, and keeps alerts, background processing, secure storage and live calling working within store rules and enterprise device-management policies.
Candidates must be genuinely strong in iOS or Android, comfortable with the other platform, and conversant with how mobile systems are built and constrained. Predictable behavior through unstable networks and local state changes matters, as does diagnosing problems on physical handsets and using live crash data to guide fixes. Owning architecture advice and its consequences is expected, as is skilled use of coding agents with good engineering judgment.
The posting says the company evaluates people on what they have delivered rather than the number of years they have worked. Pluses include React Native and TypeScript, offline-capable data sync, real-time calling stacks, enterprise device distribution, and regulated product experience. The target pay band is $165,000 to $215,000 USD, and the position may require a US government security clearance and compliance with export rules such as EAR and ITAR.
Responsibilities
- Build for degraded and contested network conditions
- Strengthen behavior across connection drops, sync and recovery
- Track and raise stability using telemetry
- Tune startup, network, storage, rendering, memory and battery use
- Own the native iOS and Android bridges and the boundary with shared code
- Keep notifications, background tasks, secure storage and live calls working
- Find root causes from native traces, telemetry and limited field logs
- Advise on architecture, weighing near-term delivery against where the platform should head
- Mentor engineers on mobile design, reliability and speed
Requirements
- Real depth in iOS or Android, with working knowledge of the other
- Grounding in mobile architecture, platform APIs, lifecycle limits and networking
- Track record building resilient apps for unstable connectivity and state changes

- Owning architecture decisions and their results
- Comfort moving between native and shared codebases
- Fluent, judicious use of coding agents
