Job Description

Pacific Defense is hiring a Senior PCB Designer for a remote position. The company builds high-end electronics for the U.S. Defense Department and commercial buyers, using open architecture and rapid prototyping to deliver sensing and effects systems that operate on the ground, in the air, at sea and in orbit. The firm describes itself as small and fast-moving and says it is growing. Because the work is classified, applicants must be U.S. citizens.

The designer owns board layout and the process behind it. Responsibilities include coordinating with digital design, mechanical and thermal engineers during component placement and routing, keeping a shared library of symbols and footprints, and writing and enforcing design procedures for staff and outside PCB contractors. The person also works with fabrication and assembly shops to resolve issues before and during production and leads reviews of both internal and outside layouts.

Candidates need deep layout experience: at least 10 years of routing work (Allegro preferred) and at least 10 years building fast digital and mixed-signal circuit boards starting from schematic netlists. Designs above 10 Gbps and 6 GHz, DDR4 interfaces, 16-plus-layer stacks with buried and blind vias, and controlled-impedance routing are all relevant. Work should comply with IPC standards. Relevant industry background meets the education requirement, and a bachelor's or associate's degree in electrical or computer engineering, computer science or computer-aided drafting is preferred. Benefits include a competitive salary, a 401(k) match that vests immediately, medical, dental, vision and life coverage, a flexible spending account and paid time off. No base pay figure is given.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with digital design engineers on placement and routing so layouts meet specifications.
  • Align with mechanical engineers on structural soundness and thermal limits.
  • Guide outside PCB designers so their output follows company processes and deliverable standards.
  • Work with board fabricators to meet layout intent and resolve production issues.
  • Clarify requirements with contract assembly houses before and during assembly.
  • Curate and maintain a central library of footprints.
  • Document how symbols and footprints are built, make sure the process is followed, and help junior designers with new footprints.
  • Chair design reviews for in-house and external layouts.

Requirements

  • A decade or more of board layout and routing work, with Allegro favored.
  • At least 10 years building fast digital and mixed-signal circuit boards starting from schematic netlists.
  • Hands-on work above 10 Gbps and 6 GHz.
  • Background with fast memory buses such as DDR4.
  • Experience with 16-plus-layer boards that use buried and blind vias.
  • Experience with controlled-impedance lines in stripline, microstrip and coplanar waveguide forms.
  • Experience creating symbols and footprints and documenting the processes that govern them.
  • Design work that meets IPC requirements.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens, since the work is classified.
  • Relevant industry experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or associate's degree in electrical or computer engineering, computer science or computer-aided drafting (preferred).

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and a 401(k) match that vests immediately.
  • Medical, dental, vision and life premiums covered at 100% for employees and 75% for dependents.
  • Flexible spending account for incidental healthcare costs.
  • Paid time off plus federal holidays off.
