Job Description
Motional is seeking a Senior Robotics Engineer to join its Systems Readiness and Performance team on a full-time, remote basis. The company operates as an autonomous driving venture backed by Hyundai Motor Group, focusing on the development and commercial deployment of driverless robotaxis. In this capacity, the selected professional will act as a primary bridge between software engineering and practical roadway execution.
This position requires investigating, troubleshooting, and diagnosing intricate autonomous vehicle behaviors across real-world roadways, hardware-in-the-loop systems, and synthetic or resimulation platforms. Candidates will take complete charge of ambiguous technical hurdles, utilizing Python programming, custom Spaceship tooling, and data visualization tools to isolate core issues and drive practical resolutions. The work directly impacts system safety cases and supports executive-level reporting as well as unified software release narratives.
The role suits experienced engineers who possess a strong foundation in robotics autonomy stacks, comprehensive data analysis capabilities, and the capacity to operate with minimal oversight. Practitioners will regularly interface across diverse subsystems—including perception, localization, planning, and controls—to evaluate and report on system-level performance.
Responsibilities
- Conduct deep technical investigations of undesirable autonomous vehicle behaviors utilizing simulation, hardware-in-the-loop, and on-road operational data
- Assume end-to-end ownership of complex troubleshooting tasks from initial triage through final resolution
- Debug interactions across multiple subsystems including perception, prediction, localization, planning, controls, and vehicle systems
- Analyze large volumes of software logs and telemetry data using Python
- Build automated diagnostic workflows and custom internal tooling with Python and Spaceship
- Design interactive dashboards using Python frameworks and Business Intelligence platforms like Looker to measure and report system performance
- Formulate technical hypotheses from ambiguous evidence and systematically test potential root causes
- Identify recurring performance regressions and categorize failure modes independently
- Synthesize complex technical metrics into clear summaries for executive reporting and cross-functional release narratives
Requirements
- Have at least five years of professional software or systems engineering experience working on safety-critical, complex systems such as autonomous vehicles, robotics, medical devices, or aerospace
- Demonstrate strong proficiency in Python for data analysis and scripting alongside modern software development principles
- Maintain a thorough understanding of robotics systems including sensors, actuators, and software autonomy stacks
- Show proficiency with Git and standard version control workflows within an agile continuous integration and continuous deployment environment
- Exhibit strong analytical skills and the ability to conduct root-cause analysis using system logs
Qualifications
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Engineering fields such as Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Robotics, or possess equivalent work experience
- Possess a Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline
- Bring experience using autonomous vehicle-specific software diagnostic and visualization tools like Planner Analyzer
- Demonstrate knowledge of statistical analysis and machine learning techniques relevant to system performance evaluation
