Job Description
Motional is seeking a Senior Robotics Engineer to focus on AV Performance Diagnosis & Evaluation for its driverless technology operations. The company creates safe and accessible autonomous vehicles, operating robotaxis and building infrastructure to transform transportation.
This position sits on the Systems Readiness and Performance team, which acts as a bridge between software development and real-world deployment. The person in this role will take end-to-end ownership of investigating complex autonomous vehicle behaviors across on-road testing, resimulation, and synthetic simulation environments. Key duties involve debugging issues across perception, prediction, localization, planning, controls, and vehicle systems, as well as building automated diagnostic workflows and interactive performance dashboards.
The role suits a professional with a background in safety-critical robotics or autonomous systems who can independently perform root-cause analysis, manage ambiguous problem spaces, and translate deep technical metrics into summaries for leadership.
Responsibilities
- Perform deep technical investigations of undesirable autonomous vehicle behaviors across simulation, hardware-in-the-loop, and on-road operations
- Debug issues across perception, prediction, localization, planning, controls, and vehicle systems
- Analyze large datasets from software outputs, system logs, and telemetry utilizing Python
- Create automated diagnostic workflows and custom internal tools using Python and Spaceship
- Design interactive dashboards with Python frameworks and Business Intelligence tools such as Looker
- Formulate technical hypotheses from ambiguous data and design analyses to test potential root causes
- Identify recurring performance regressions, failure modes, and systemic issues autonomously
- Translate raw performance metrics into clear summaries for executive reporting and cross-functional teams
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Systems, Electrical, Robotics, or a related engineering field, or equivalent practical experience
- Minimum of five years of professional software or systems engineering experience working on complex, safety-critical systems like autonomous vehicles, robotics, aerospace, or medical devices
- Strong proficiency in Python for scripting and data analysis
- Solid understanding of robotics systems, including software autonomy stacks, sensors, and actuators
- Familiarity with modern software development principles and version control workflows using Git
- Ability to travel for one to two weeks each quarter, primarily to testing sites in Las Vegas and other domestic locations
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Systems, Robotics, or a related field
- Experience utilizing autonomous vehicle-specific software diagnostic and visualization tools like Planner Analyzer
- Knowledge of statistical analysis and machine learning techniques applied to performance evaluation
Core Skills
Benefits
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k) plan with a company match
