Job Description
Mural builds a visual thinking product, and this full-time role sits in its Canvas Core team. That team is responsible for the foundational platform behind the Mural editor, including the infinite canvas, core editor components, document editing behaviour, asset management and real-time collaboration. The group also maintains the Mural user interface, a real-time message protocol and the internal developer APIs that other teams use for features such as diagramming, workshops and presentations.
As a Senior Software Engineer, the person will help design, build and improve this platform so the editor stays reliable, fast and easy to use. Work includes building systems for document and object models, spatial indexing, layout and selection, as well as collaboration systems that keep co-edited files consistent. The role involves partnering across Product, Design and Engineering to turn open-ended platform problems into maintainable technical solutions, and includes performance work such as profiling and moving heavy computation away from interaction paths.
Senior engineers at Mural are expected to lead by example through technical design, code review, mentoring and improvements to engineering practice. The posting asks for 6 or more years of experience shipping large production software, fluency in modern JavaScript or TypeScript, and experience with distributed or low-latency systems. It lists a salary range of USD 82,400 to 103,000 per year and says the final offer depends on factors such as location, level and experience. The posting does not state a work location.
Responsibilities
- Deliver new Canvas platform capabilities from problem definition through release, measurement and iteration
- Work alongside Product and Design to define the user experience, weighing delivery speed against long-term platform needs
- Create sustainable platform systems, owning their quality, speed, dependability and developer experience
- Help define the internal developer APIs, component boundaries and contracts that other teams depend on
- Create detailed document and object models, with spatial indexing, layout logic, asset handling and selection handling
- Work on live collaboration systems and reason about event sequencing, lag, conflicts and breakdown scenarios
- Help integrate AI-enabled features where they meet the canvas, document model, collaboration systems or developer platform
- Make the editor faster by profiling, locating bottlenecks and simplifying architecture
- Mentor engineers, lead design reviews and demos, and improve engineering practice
Requirements
- 6 or more years delivering large production software within an agile group
- Strong JavaScript or TypeScript skills, with familiarity with React, Node.js or similar frameworks
- Background creating systems that scale, stay dependable and run fast, plus abstractions developers can use
- Skill in defining API contracts and service boundaries that hold up over time, with sound validation and error handling
- Background in distributed or low-latency systems, for example collaboration tools, messaging protocols or shared-state apps
- Understanding of synchronisation, consistency, event ordering and performance trade-offs
- Performance optimisation experience, such as profiling and reducing latency and memory or CPU use
Qualifications
- Exposure to rich object models, such as hierarchical document structures, spatial indexing and selection mechanics
- Interest in or hands-on work with AI-enabled product features
- Knowledge of concurrency, background computation or rendering pipelines
- Practical use of AI-assisted tools to prototype, test and document work
- Experience in fast-paced, high-growth settings
