Job Description

Cloudflare seeks a Senior Software Engineer, Cloudflare for SaaS to design, build, and operate core backend services and RESTful application programming interfaces. The employer operates a massive global network that accelerates and protects millions of internet properties, ranging from independent blogs to large enterprise platforms. In this position, the engineer will work on systems that empower software-as-a-service providers to offer customized branded domains to their own clients, handling millions of domains while managing onboarding, validation, certificate issuance, and global configuration deployment.

This role focuses heavily on backend development, utilizing Go and other programming languages to modernize legacy control-plane workflows, scale distributed systems, and ensure high operational reliability. The candidate will collaborate closely with product management and fellow engineers by writing technical specifications, conducting code reviews, and participating in incident response and debugging. Ideal candidates value curiosity over bureaucracy and enjoy tackling complex challenges involving state consistency, data modeling, and observability across distributed architectures.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate reliable backend services and APIs for managing customer domains and configurations
  • Evolve the control plane to support tens of millions of customer domains without sacrificing performance or availability
  • Improve domain and certificate lifecycle workflows such as onboarding, validation, renewal, migration, and deletion
  • Model ownership and shared state carefully to maintain consistency across distributed configuration stores
  • Build observability tools, alerts, and operational procedures while participating in debugging and incident response
  • Collaborate across engineering and product teams to document designs, evaluate trade-offs, and review peer code

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of professional experience building backend systems at a technology company
  • Experience writing production-quality code in Go or another language, along with a willingness to learn Go
  • Experience designing, building, and operating distributed systems or high-scale services
  • Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills spanning applications, data stores, and production environments
  • Proficiency with modern Unix and Linux development and runtime environments
  • A track record of delivering well-tested, reliable code and taking production ownership of it
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills for explaining technical decisions and tradeoffs

Qualifications

  • Experience designing and evolving external RESTful APIs for customers
  • Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases such as PostgreSQL, covering schema and query design
  • Understanding of distributed-system concepts including consistency, caching, concurrency, and failure recovery
  • Experience modernizing legacy systems or migrating workflows to service-oriented architectures
  • Experience with observability tools and practices such as metrics, logs, tracing, alerting, and service-level objectives
  • Familiarity with PKI, TLS, certificate lifecycle management, ACME, DNS, or domain validation
  • Experience with message queues, Kubernetes, or globally distributed configuration systems
