The company is currently seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Cobalt to develop the native application runtime for connected TVs using the Cobalt browser engine. In this position, the engineer will construct the bridge linking Tubi's React application to target devices, starting with Fire TV and scaling to other living room platforms.
This role suits an experienced systems professional who can optimize performance on low-end hardware with 1 GB of RAM. The person filling this position will create and ship the runtime as a native library, implement Starboard platform integrations, write native modules in modern C++ and Rust, and maintain upstream Cobalt updates. Working closely with QA, web engineers, and device partners, the successful candidate will also mentor teammates to raise the overall technical bar.
The position is available on a hybrid basis requiring two days per week in the San Francisco office. It offers the opportunity to drive startup and memory performance initiatives, build development and CI tooling, and collaborate on media and playback pipelines.
Responsibilities

- Develop and maintain Starboard platform integrations covering graphics, audio and video playback, input, DRM, and system services
- Create native modules utilizing C++ and Rust, ensuring safe FFI boundaries
- Optimize memory consumption and startup speed on hardware with 1 GB of RAM

- Collaborate with playback and media teams regarding video pipeline requirements like adaptive streaming and ad playback
- Construct tooling for running the application on developer machines and CI environments
- Coordinate directly with device partner engineering teams to resolve platform challenges
- Provide mentorship to engineering colleagues to elevate systems and native coding standards
Requirements
- Minimum of 6 years of professional software engineering experience with a primary focus on native or systems code
- Expert-level proficiency in modern C++ including concurrency, memory management, templates, and debugging large codebases
- Solid production background in Rust covering lifetimes, ownership, asynchronous programming, unsafe code, and C or C++ interop
- Familiarity with large C++ build systems such as CMake, GN and Ninja, or Bazel alongside cross-compiling for embedded Linux, Android, or ARM targets
- Hands-on performance optimization experience utilizing tools like Perfetto, perf, or heaptrack to measure and improve CPU, startup, and memory metrics
- Practical debugging capability on physical hardware using adb, Android NDK, native crash analysis, and symbolication
- Strong written communication skills combined with a history of leading technical initiatives across multiple teams
Qualifications
- Familiarity with Chromium, Cobalt, Starboard, Servo, or Blink browser engines
- Understanding of JavaScript engine internals such as V8 code caching, garbage collection tuning, or snapshots
