Job Description
Wise operates in London and seeks a Senior Software Engineer II for its Treasury FX function, working on-site within the Market Data and Risk Engineering teams. This role suits an experienced engineer with a product focus and deep systems knowledge to construct real-time financial infrastructure handling currency pricing, risk calculations, and trade execution. Wise builds technology for moving money globally, and this position focuses on creating automated hedging platforms, processing streaming market data from sources like Bloomberg and Reuters, and supporting dozens of internal consumers.

Responsibilities include building real-time data pipelines, expanding rate infrastructure throughput, and developing production infrastructure for quantitative risk models. The technology stack features Java 21, Spring Boot 4.x, Python 3.12, Apache Flink, Kafka, and gRPC with Protobuf.
This role requires someone capable of addressing complex challenges in distributed systems and high-throughput environments. Candidates will collaborate closely with quantitative researchers, FX dealers, and treasury controllers to translate operational needs into technical designs while guiding architectural evolution and mentoring team members.

- Scale rate infrastructure to handle increased throughput for FX Forwards and non-deliverable forwards
- Develop production infrastructure for quantitative models covering Value at Risk and dynamic pricing
- Design Kafka topologies and manage schema evolution across the entire data pipeline
- Lead technical roadmaps across teams, mentor engineers, and manage incident responses for critical services
Requirements
- At least 8 years of professional software engineering experience in financial systems, trading, or real-time data infrastructure
- Extensive background in Java 17 or higher with Spring Boot in high-throughput production settings
- Broad experience with Apache Kafka, topic design, schema evolution, and consumer group management at scale
- Strong data engineering abilities involving real-time streaming pipelines with Apache Flink, Kafka Streams, or similar tools
- Proven history of designing and operating distributed systems processing millions of daily events
- Demonstrated capability to own end-to-end system reliability including SLOs, alerting, and disaster recovery
