Job Description

GitLab is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for its Authentication team in India to help develop the next generation of identity and access management solutions. GitLab provides an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, trusted by millions of users worldwide to streamline software delivery, enhance operational efficiency, and mitigate security risks. In this full-time role, the engineer will work on both the existing Rails monolith and GATE, a new centralized service designed for token issuance, validation, and identity management across all deployment models including SaaS, Self-Managed, Dedicated, and air-gapped environments. The position involves designing modern authentication mechanisms, building passwordless login options like passkeys, supporting AI agent identities, and refining directory integrations such as SAML, LDAP, OIDC, and SCIM.

This role is well-suited for a backend engineer experienced in building scalable services and handling cryptographic token systems. Team members are expected to embrace artificial intelligence tools to optimize their daily workflows. The position collaborates closely with peers to shape product direction, address security vulnerabilities, and establish high engineering standards while participating in an iterative development process.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the strategic roadmap for GATE and other authentication services.
  • Design and implement token issuance, validation, and identity features utilizing Go and Ruby.
  • Transition token management pathways away from the monolith while preserving system reliability.
  • Develop novel authentication mechanisms like Workload Identity Federation from scratch.
  • Enhance organization security by building access control tooling and resolving HackerOne vulnerabilities.
  • Promote software craftsmanship standards through code reviews and documentation.
  • Engage with external communities regarding company initiatives and open source contributions.
  • Deliver medium-sized improvements independently and partner with colleagues on larger features.

Requirements

  • Professional software development background utilizing Go or Ruby within mission-critical or scaling SaaS platforms.
  • Familiarity with authorization and authentication protocols such as OAuth, OIDC, SAML, SCIM, LDAP, JWT, or RBAC.
  • Understanding of token frameworks, cryptographic key management, and digital signing.
  • Demonstrated ability to shepherd a service through its complete lifecycle from conception to production.
  • Strong English communication skills suitable for a collaborative work environment.

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Flexible paid time off
  • Participation in team member resource groups
  • Equity compensation and an employee stock purchase plan
  • Access to a growth and development fund
  • Parental leave
