Job Description

Skylight operates as a digital consultancy that leverages technology and design to assist government entities in improving public services. The organization is currently seeking a Senior or Staff Data Scientist to join its team on a full-time, remote basis supporting the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) Data Capacity and Digital Services organization.

In this position, professionals organize, analyze, visualize, and synthesize data to help government stakeholders and product teams make informed choices. The role emphasizes data ingestion, storage, processing, and visualization more heavily than predictive analytics, and also involves light engineering tasks such as building small automations or tools with platforms like Power Apps, AI, and DataBricks. Candidates should possess a consultant mindset, comfortable with ambiguity, direct engagement with senior leaders, and technical capacity building rather than traditional backlog ticket management.

Total compensation ranges from $90,000 to $203,000 per year depending on the specific seniority level determined during the interview process. Eligible applicants must conduct all work within the United States, maintain legal authorization to work without sponsorship, and be able to successfully pass a Tier 2 public trust background investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with executive and program stakeholders to frame appropriate questions and find answers despite ambiguous requests
  • Organize data and construct data pipelines using tools such as Palantir Foundry and PowerBI
  • Build and integrate AI agents into workflows while validating their outputs
  • Visualize grant and program information using PowerBI and Tableau
  • Analyze large structured and unstructured datasets to uncover trends and patterns
  • Develop lightweight tools, prototypes, and automations utilizing platforms like Credal and Power Apps
  • Propose business solutions and choose appropriate tools, frameworks, and open-source or low/no-code solutions
  • Communicate actionable findings through data visualization for leadership
  • Construct predictive models and machine learning algorithms periodically
  • Collaborate within cross-functional teams comprising engineers, product managers, designers, and researchers

Requirements

  • Strategic use of data to identify questions, communicate ideas, and drive business decisions
  • Familiarity with modern data engineering practices including data cleaning and preprocessing
  • Ability to analyze datasets using correct methods and build credible statistical models
  • Capacity to preserve data security and privacy during analysis
  • Skill in articulating data, models, and findings to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Adeptness at using proper visualization tools to showcase actionable insights and trends
  • Ability to build small tools and automations using low-code and AI platforms like Credal, DataBricks, and Microsoft Power Apps
  • Experience working within iterative, cross-functional product delivery teams
  • Must conduct all work within the U.S. excluding U.S. territories
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without future sponsorship
  • Must be able to obtain a Tier 2 public trust background investigation
  • Must successfully complete a company background check

Qualifications

  • Experience or interest in policy, public health, or human services
  • Background handling grants management data and large unstructured datasets
  • Familiarity with Palantir Foundry or Databricks
  • Experience delivering AI-forward technology in government, regulated industries, or public-benefit settings
  • Track record of remaining aligned and accountable while working on remote teams
  • Degree or additional years of experience as required for specific federal contracts

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Short-term and long-term disability insurance
  • Life and AD&D insurance
  • Healthcare FSA, dependent care FSA, and health savings account
  • Dollar-for-dollar 401(k) match up to 10% of salary with no vesting period
  • Flexible paid time off policy of generally 25 days per year plus 11 paid federal holidays
  • Up to 12 weeks of paid time off for eligible new birth, adoption, or foster parents
  • Performance rewards including annual salary increases, performance bonuses, spot bonuses, and stock options
  • Business development, sales, and referral bonuses
  • Annual $2,000 allowance for professional development
  • Annual $750 tech-related purchase allowance
  • Annual $100 swag budget
