InfluxData, the organization behind the time series platform InfluxDB, seeks a Senior Staff Software Engineer. Operating as a remote-first enterprise with a distributed team, the company builds tools enabling developers to collect, examine, and process timestamped information at scale. Reporting to the Chief Product Officer, this position acts as a company-level technical authority focusing on InfluxDB 3.0, a columnar database written in Rust and built on Apache Arrow, Arrow Flight, and DataFusion.
This individual contributor role combines hands-on engineering with enterprise-wide architectural guidance. Responsibilities include designing the storage engine, defining long-term technical strategies, establishing engineering standards, and mentoring senior personnel. The candidate will collaborate across divisions, influence product direction, and represent engineering perspectives to customers and executives.
Responsibilities
- Shape long-term technical vision and strategy for InfluxDB 3.0 and the wider product portfolio
- Partner with engineering leaders on product strategy, roadmap planning, and build-versus-buy choices
- Design and write production Rust code for the storage engine including ingestion, compaction, columnar storage, caching, and query execution
- Drive development in distributed caching, reliability, and performance from benchmarks to production environments
- Contribute to cloud deployment discussions across AWS and Azure
- Establish engineering standards and operational best practices across multiple divisions
- Participate in the on-call rotation
- Mentor staff and senior engineers to grow future technical leaders
Requirements
- Fifteen or more years of progressive software engineering experience, featuring several years at a senior staff level or higher
- Demonstrated track record of constructing and running distributed systems at large scale
- Hands-on background utilizing multiple cloud vendors and object storage
- Deep practical Rust capabilities or strong systems experience with a willingness to master Rust
- Expertise in performance engineering, reliability, and distributed caching
- Proven ability to guide technical direction across multiple teams and influence executive decisions
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for interaction with engineers, executives, and clients
Qualifications
- Advanced degree in computer science or a related discipline
- Experience handling time series or observability workloads at high ingest rates
- Background running a database as a managed cloud service
- Published writing, talks, or papers concerning databases or distributed systems
