Job Description
Carbon, a company best known for additive manufacturing and 3D printing, is hiring a Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer to help set the hardware direction for its next generation of printing platforms. The role is remote with a North Carolina home-office base. It is a senior technical leadership position on a fast-moving hardware team that works through open-ended problems to deliver reliable systems.
The engineer owns the upper-level mechanical design of new platforms, with emphasis on modularity, serviceability and precision. This role bridges the hardware team with systems, electronics, software and materials staff, reducing risk on products built from scratch. The engineer also defines company-wide standards for validation, reliability testing and design for manufacturability, and partners with leadership and product management on a multi-year technical plan.
The role serves as a decision-maker in design reviews and root cause analyses for high-stakes hardware failures, and works to find and resolve architectural gaps that limit long-term performance. Mentoring engineers across the hardware organization is a central part of the position.
Candidates should bring twelve-plus years of mechanical or mechatronics product work, including volume shipments of complex systems. The posting expects advanced command of thermodynamics, structural response and precision motion control, plus experience directing contract manufacturing partners and global pilot and production builds. Fluency with the ASME Y14.5 tolerancing standard, plus DFMEA and SPC, is also expected. For North Carolina hires, the posted base range is $167,600 to $251,400, and the company aims to hire near a midpoint of $209,500.
Responsibilities

- Serve as the link between systems, electronics, software and materials-science teams
- Set company-wide engineering standards for validation, reliability and manufacturability
- Shape a multi-year technical roadmap with leadership and product management
- Find and resolve architectural gaps that affect long-term product performance
- Make technical calls in design reviews and root cause analyses for serious hardware failures
Requirements
- Twelve-plus years of mechanical or mechatronics product work, including complex systems carried to volume production

- Experience managing Tier 1 JDM or CM partners and directing pilot and production builds
- Ability to turn technical trade-offs into clear recommendations for leadership
- Practical skill with ASME Y14.5 geometric tolerancing, DFMEA and SPC on volume hardware
- Analysis capability covering tolerances, safety margins, heat, stress, fatigue, service life, producibility, failure modes and cost
- Material selection experience across sheet metal, metal, plastics and elastomers
Qualifications
- Coding skills in software or firmware for custom tooling or automated test rigs (a bonus)
- Hands-on background with optics, fluidics or UV-cure resin chemistry (a bonus)
- Patents or proprietary innovations in robotics, automation or additive manufacturing (a bonus)
