Job Description

This full-time Senior Technical Program Manager role at Monzo can be based in London or carried out remotely within the UK. Monzo, a British bank, describes its purpose as making money work for all. The role places programme managers in engineering teams for Payments or Business Banking. In Payments, the team launches a greater volume and higher quality of payment products, tackling difficult engineering questions so that money moves more smoothly for millions of people. In Business Banking, the aim is to make Monzo a financial control centre for small businesses, covering invoicing, expenses, payments and automation.

Whichever team the manager joins, the role leads end-to-end planning and launch of payment products that cross several teams and disciplines. The job includes defining programme roadmaps and milestones, setting priorities, weighing trade-offs, tracking the critical path and risks, and keeping the work aligned with business goals. The manager coordinates dependencies and the order of delivery, communicates with technical and non-technical stakeholders, and makes calls that clear blockers and speed things up.

The role brings engineering, product and other teams together to give complicated programmes clarity. The manager must communicate clearly and persuasively to audiences including executive leadership, challenge and influence people constructively, and understand how product features and platforms come together to deliver value to users. Spotting and reducing delivery risk early, and proposing technical solutions, are expected. The manager is comfortable examining data and architecture closely when a decision is complex and lacks an obvious answer.

Applicants should bring five or more years of steering complicated technology programmes or products from first concept to release, and should feel at home in an international business spanning several markets. The hiring process consists of a recruiter call, an initial call with an engineering leader and a loop of three one-hour interviews. Pay depends on experience and includes equity and stock options, and the company offers a learning budget and flexible working hours.
