Job Description
Astra Finance operates a scalable financial infrastructure platform that handles billions in transaction volume yearly, offering developers and product teams APIs for real-time transfers, bank debits, card disbursements, and regulatory compliance tooling. The organization is hiring a Senior Transaction Monitoring Analyst to manage, operate, and enhance its transaction monitoring program. In this remote-first position reporting directly to the Head of Compliance, the professional will collaborate closely with the Engineering, Product, and Operations departments.
The role centers on designing, testing, and refining detection rules across various payment networks, including ACH, RTP, FedNow, and debit rails. The chosen candidate will investigate payment alerts, write clear investigative narratives, and prepare suspicious activity referrals for sponsor banks. This position requires someone who pairs deep anti-money laundering and financial crimes expertise with hands-on technical proficiency, including the ability to query large datasets independently and optimize monitoring logic to reduce false positives.
Responsibilities
- Design, test, and maintain monitoring rules across ACH, RTP, FedNow, and debit payment rails
- Develop risk-based scenarios addressing typologies like velocity anomalies, rapid fund movements, and structuring
- Backtest and tune detection logic to minimize false positives while strengthening coverage
- Investigate potentially suspicious customer activity and transactions using internal data sources
- Document findings with clear investigative narratives and submit suspicious activity referrals to sponsor banks
- Respond to information requests and support follow-up reviews initiated by sponsor banks
- Track alert volumes, backlogs, and case aging metrics to maintain operational timeliness
- Utilize SQL to query transaction data, evaluate monitoring efficacy, and uncover emerging risks
- Collaborate with Product and Engineering to establish new monitoring capabilities and case management workflows
- Define compliance monitoring requirements prior to launching new payment flows or products
Requirements
- Minimum of four years of experience in transaction monitoring, BSA/AML, or financial crimes compliance within banking, fintech, or payments
- Hands-on background in designing, implementing, and tuning monitoring rules rather than solely reviewing alerts
- Demonstrated ability to independently conduct complex investigations and escalate suspicious activity
- Strong understanding of financial crimes typologies, risk-based monitoring, and BSA/AML regulations
- Working familiarity with payment rails such as RTP, ACH, and debit networks
- Experience managing alert queues while keeping operations timely and maintaining quality standards
- Proficiency in SQL for querying and evaluating large transaction datasets
- Experience configuring, testing, and optimizing rules within platforms like Unit21, Sardine, Actimize, or Verafin
- Ability to translate detection requirements into rule thresholds, aggregation windows, velocity calculations, and behavioral patterns
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, economics, finance, criminal justice, or a related field
- Professional certification such as CAMS or CFE
- Experience working at a BaaS company, payments fintech, or processor operating under a sponsor-bank model
- Prior background building or significantly improving an entire transaction monitoring program
- Exposure to complex use cases including lending, embedded finance, payroll, real-time payments, or card disbursements
- Familiarity with Python or comparable tools for rule testing, transaction analysis, or automation
- Knowledge of rule governance, model validation, and sponsor-bank expectations
- Startup experience spanning day-to-day compliance operations and technical implementation
Core Skills
Benefits
- Competitive compensation including equity in a growing financial technology company
- Remote-first working environment with flexible arrangements
- Professional growth opportunities centered on risk management and compliance
