Job Description

GitLab operates an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, helping organizations accelerate digital transformation, enhance developer productivity, and improve operational efficiency. The company is seeking Site Reliability Engineers across its Infrastructure Platforms division, ranging from intermediate levels up to senior staff, for a remote position.

This role focuses on maintaining the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of user-facing production systems. Candidates are evaluated holistically rather than applying to a specific team initially, ensuring placement matches both their background and active hiring needs.

The engineering teams combine software engineering with operational practices, using automation, infrastructure as code, and observability tooling to manage services at scale. Daily workflows incorporate artificial intelligence as a productivity multiplier. The hiring process consists of a recruiter screen, core technical assessment, hiring manager interview, peer technical discussion, and a skip-level interview.

Applicants must be based in the United States or Canada. The role suits engineers with strong technical fundamentals, a growth mindset, and experience in cloud environments, Kubernetes, and infrastructure as code.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of user-facing services and production systems
  • Develop automation and tooling to eliminate manual toil and establish repeatable workflows driven by infrastructure as code
  • Operate and troubleshoot production systems running on Kubernetes, covering deployments, scaling, and rollouts
  • Write and maintain infrastructure as code, deploying modifications safely through CI/CD and GitOps
  • Participate in on-call rotations, evaluate alerts, execute runbooks, and escalate issues appropriately
  • Contribute to observability systems by utilizing metrics, logs, SLOs, and SLIs to detect issues proactively
  • Engage in incident response and post-incident reviews to convert learnings into operational and automation enhancements
  • Document architecture decisions, runbooks, and reviews to establish repeatable team practices

Requirements

  • Experience ensuring production system reliability by merging operational mindset with software engineering practices
  • Demonstrated history of building new infrastructure tooling and automation from scratch, such as Terraform modules or Kubernetes operators
  • Ability to read, debug, and reason about code written in languages such as Go or Ruby
  • Practical experience with infrastructure as code and Kubernetes ecosystems
  • Hands-on background working with at least one major cloud provider, specifically GCP or AWS
  • Familiarity with observability metrics, logging, alerting, and SLOs
  • Comfort with on-call duties and structured incident response under pressure
  • Strong written communication skills suited for an asynchronous, distributed work environment

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Flexible paid time off
  • Team member resource groups
  • Equity compensation and employee stock purchase plan
  • Growth and development fund
  • Parental leave
