Job Description
GitLab is hiring a Site Reliability Engineer for its Infrastructure Platforms team, operating as a remote position available exclusively to candidates based in the United Kingdom. This is a continuous opening covering levels from Intermediate through Senior Staff, where applicants are evaluated holistically and matched to the most suitable team and seniority based on their background and current company hiring priorities.
GitLab develops an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, serving over fifty million registered users and more than fifty percent of the Fortune 100. The infrastructure organization handles the availability, performance, and scalability of user-facing production systems like GitLab.com across multiple specialized groups.
Site Reliability Engineers at GitLab blend software engineering practices with operational focus to build, run, and scale production infrastructure. The role involves writing infrastructure as code, automating manual workflows, troubleshooting Kubernetes environments, handling on-call duties, and contributing to observability metrics. Candidates are not expected to know every tool in the technology stack beforehand, but should possess strong technical fundamentals, a growth mindset, and comfort working in a distributed, asynchronous environment.
Responsibilities
- Keep production systems and user-facing services reliable, efficient, and scalable.
- Develop automation and tooling utilizing infrastructure as code to minimize manual work.
- Operate, deploy, scale, and troubleshoot production environments on Kubernetes.
- Write and implement infrastructure changes safely via CI/CD pipelines and GitOps workflows.
- Take part in on-call rotations, handle alert triage, and follow or improve operational runbooks.
- Contribute to observability frameworks using metrics, logs, and service-level objectives.
- Participate in incident response and post-incident reviews to convert learnings into automated processes.
- Document architecture decisions, runbooks, and review findings for the wider team.
Requirements
- Experience maintaining production system reliability using both operational judgment and software engineering practices.
- Ability to build net-new infrastructure automation and tooling rather than solely configuring existing solutions.
- Capacity to read, debug, and reason about code, with familiarity in Go or Ruby.
- Practical background with infrastructure as code and Kubernetes at a level matching the applicant's seniority.
- Hands-on operational experience with at least one major cloud platform such as AWS or GCP.
- Familiarity with logging, metrics, alerting, and service-level indicators or objectives.
- Comfort with incident response and structured troubleshooting during high-pressure situations.
- Strong written communication skills suited for an asynchronous, distributed workplace.
