Job Description
Autodesk is seeking a Software Architect to join its Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) Data organization. In this senior individual-contributor role, the architect will define cloud-native services and distributed systems architecture powering the AEC Data Model and connected platforms across the entire built-asset lifecycle. Operating on an established architecture track, the professional will report to the Distinguished Architect and Lead Software Architect of the AEC Data team.
This position is ideal for an experienced technical leader who enjoys driving cross-team alignment through architectural standards, reference designs, and decision records rather than managing a single service. The role involves designing API surfaces, shaping semantic data schemas, de-risking concepts through prototyping, and ensuring system performance, security, and reliability. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with domain experts, product teams, and global colleagues across various Autodesk design and construction offerings like Revit, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D.
Responsibilities
- Design and evolve API surfaces across AEC Data services to ensure coherent contracts and backward-compatible versioning.
- Define cross-team, cloud-native architectures including distributed systems, service contracts, and event-driven data flows.
- Create, document, and manage data schemas for AEC domain entities, handling versioning, validation rules, and migration strategies.
- Establish reference architectures, standards, and architecture decision records for review by a cross-organizational council.
- Evaluate alternative architectural approaches through technical modeling and prototyping to reduce risks before broad adoption.
- Mentor engineers and technical staff while fostering technical depth and architectural best practices across multiple teams.
- Establish service-level objectives, enforce security and performance standards, and drive comprehensive observability.
- Communicate complex architectural plans through clear diagrams and executive-ready narratives.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or possess equivalent professional experience.
- Demonstrate at least 10 years of experience designing cloud-native, distributed systems.
- Bring a minimum of 5 years operating at a cross-team architect level such as Software Architect, Principal Engineer, or Staff+.
- Possess deep expertise in cloud services, particularly AWS, along with API and service design patterns like microservices and event-driven architectures.
- Demonstrate solid grounding in data modeling, schema definition languages, and evolution strategies for API contracts and data schemas.
- Exhibit a proven ability to influence without direct authority and drive technical alignment across cross-functional teams.
- Possess strong leadership and mentoring capabilities with excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
Qualifications
- Familiarity with AWS core infrastructure components including EC2, ECS, Lambda, API Gateway, S3, DynamoDB, and RDS.
- Experience with domain-driven service decomposition, CQRS, event sourcing, multi-tenant designs, and GraphQL federation.
- Proficiency in relational databases and NoSQL platforms such as PostgreSQL and DynamoDB.
- Knowledge of OpenTelemetry, distributed tracing, and metrics for data services.
- Acquaintance with semantic technologies like knowledge graphs, RDF, OWL, or property graphs.
- Familiarity with Building Information Modeling concepts, Revit families, or parametric modeling systems.
- Exposure to emerging AI systems such as RAG, agentic orchestration, LLM observability, and AI safety.
- Experience in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction industry with knowledge of standards like IFC, COBie, gbXML, and CityGML.
