PayJunction is hiring a Software Architect to design enterprise payment systems and features that handle billions of dollars in annual transactions. Founded in 2000, the company provides payment processing solutions for businesses and developers. This position suits an experienced technologist who wants to lead complex engineering initiatives from conception to production while remaining hands-on with Java development.
In this role, the candidate will direct engineering teams, build high-risk architectural solutions, and establish robust security and reliability protocols. The position operates under a flex-first work policy, allowing team members to work remotely from designated states or from the Santa Barbara office. PayJunction offers a compensation package featuring a base salary between USD 240,000 and USD 275,000 per year, accompanied by comprehensive health coverage, retirement matching, and other employee benefits.
Responsibilities
- Lead complex initiatives from initial concept to production alongside product and engineering leadership
- Design high-risk systems end-to-end and author clear technical design documents
- Write production Java code during every sprint and perform prompt pull request reviews
- Mentor senior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, design evaluations, and pairing
- Architect enterprise features including single sign-on, role-based access control, audit trails, and versioned application programming interfaces
- Maintain processor-agnostic platform capabilities and optimize processor integrations
- Establish service level objectives, monitoring frameworks, and root-cause analysis procedures for reliability and compliance
- Improve delivery velocity by guiding AI-assisted development guardrails
Requirements
- Minimum of 10 years of professional software engineering experience with production systems ownership
- Minimum of 5 years of architecture experience as an Architect, Staff, or Principal Engineer
- Minimum of 5 years of working experience with Java, web frameworks, and the JVM ecosystem
- Experience mentoring senior and mid-level engineers
- Production background utilizing AWS, Linux, relational databases, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and observability tooling
- Experience designing and operating high-availability transactional systems
- Daily usage of AI coding assistants or agents
- Residency in one of the following states: CA, IL, TX, MN, CO, GA, NY, MA, or CT
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or equivalent applied experience
- Previous professional background in payments or financial technology
- Experience designing within a PCI DSS-regulated environment
