To support this mission, Slice is hiring a Software Developer for the DevEx Stateful Systems team on a remote basis, open to candidates residing in Canada, the United Kingdom, and North Macedonia, with an office located in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
This position focuses on establishing internal services and tooling that enable engineering staff to securely manage databases, message queues, data lakes, streaming pipelines, and caches without friction. The primary objective centers on system availability for customer order processing and internal analytics. The role suits backend engineers experienced in operating production databases and designing distributed infrastructure, who enjoy building self-service solutions that increase developer efficiency.
The department operates on a build-it-and-run-it framework, tasking engineers with supplying platform expertise and tooling rather than handling operations directly for other groups. The technical environment features Python, PostgreSQL on AWS RDS, Terraform, GitHub Actions, Datadog, Amazon MSK, Debezium, Apache Iceberg, and generative AI tools like Claude Code and AI agents.
Responsibilities
- Build internal application programming interfaces, services, and developer tooling for safe provisioning, migration, and troubleshooting of data stores and caches
- Automate manual operational workflows including software upgrades, database migrations, backup operations, and access requests
- Participate in the team on-call rotation to help maintain and secure production data stores
- Collaborate with product engineering teams on database schema design, query optimization, migration execution, and object-relational mapping usage
- Manage infrastructure using Terraform and enhance continuous integration and delivery pipelines via GitHub Actions
- Enhance system observability by adding instrumentation and creating actionable alerts
- Incorporate generative AI, including agentic services, to assist in building and maintaining internal platforms
Requirements
- Write production-grade software using a general-purpose programming language such as Python, Go, or Java
- Demonstrated background operating relational databases in a production environment, including schema design, migration execution, and query performance tuning
- Understanding of distributed systems principles such as idempotency, retry mechanisms, consistency trade-offs, and failure modes
- Experience managing cloud infrastructure on Amazon Web Services, including networking, Identity and Access Management, and relational database services
- Hands-on experience building and maintaining delivery pipelines with GitHub Actions
- Familiarity with operational excellence practices including system instrumentation, alert creation, and participating in on-call rotations
- Experience developing internal developer products such as command-line interfaces, APIs, and automation tools
