OfferUp is seeking a Software Development Engineer II to join the Connect team on a remote basis based out of Colombia. OfferUp provides a trusted local marketplace application connecting buyers and sellers for secondhand goods, services, and community transactions across the United States. In this role, you will help design and scale high-volume backend services, messaging systems, and notification pipelines that turn listings into successful sales.
This position suits an engineer with professional development experience who wants to own features from concept through rollout while utilizing AI coding tools to maximize productivity. You will collaborate with cross-functional partners across product, design, and data science to execute experiments, build streaming pipelines, and contribute to major technical initiatives like video infrastructure and catalog enrichment.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and deploy backend services and event-driven pipelines for messaging, notifications, location, and subscriptions
- Enhance the reliability, latency, and delivery rates of high-volume messaging systems through retries and rate limiting
- Integrate with and operate third-party platforms including Braze, Amazon Pinpoint, Google, Apple, and app store billing
- Manage features from initial planning and design to deployment, iteration, and performance measurement
- Break down complex engineering problems into manageable tasks to meet delivery schedules
- Partner with cross-functional groups such as product, design, data science, and web or mobile engineering teams
- Contribute to A/B tests and apply experimentation insights to product releases
- Conduct code reviews, promote testing best practices, and handle edge cases
- Coach and mentor junior team members, interns, and new hires
- Develop shared components, utilities, and services to boost overall team velocity
- Maintain runbooks, alerts, and monitoring for released features
- Participate in an on-call rotation
- Utilize AI coding tools like Claude Code and Gemini to elevate development speed and code quality
- Develop subject matter expertise in sub-domains like messaging, campaigns, location, or promotions
Requirements
- At least two years of professional software engineering experience
- Proven ability to independently deliver multiple features end-to-end
- Proficiency in coding with Java along with a solid grasp of microservices and distributed systems principles
- Familiarity with data structures and object-oriented design
- Working knowledge of asynchronous, event-driven systems like queues, streams, or pub/sub architectures
- Practical experience using AI coding tools within a standard engineering workflow
- Strong habits around writing tests, handling edge cases, and evaluating technical trade-offs
- Willingness to give and receive constructive feedback during code reviews
Qualifications
- Bachelor or Master degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
- Proficiency in another modern object-oriented programming language
- Familiarity with TypeScript and Node.js
- Experience working in Agile environments
- Background in building and integrating with REST APIs
- Familiarity with AWS infrastructure including DynamoDB, SQS, SNS, Lambda, and Redis
- Experience with engagement platforms like Braze, Amazon Pinpoint, APNs, or FCM, and in-app subscription billing
- Familiarity with stream processing tools such as Apache Flink or Kafka Streams
- Experience utilizing A/B testing platforms like Statsig, LaunchDarkly, or Optimizely
- Experience working with analytics warehouses including BigQuery or Snowflake
- Experience consuming or integrating LLM-based APIs such as Bedrock, Vertex AI, or OpenAI
- Familiarity with Kubernetes, Helm, and CI/CD pipelines
