Job Description
Zoox is currently seeking a Software Engineer for Fleet Simulation within their Core Data Science team. Zoox focuses on creating purpose-built, fully autonomous vehicles and the accompanying infrastructure to deliver urban mobility-as-a-service. This position is part of a cross-functional group that constructs data assets and products allowing various departments to assess and enhance autonomous fleet performance and operations.
In this capacity, the engineer will concentrate on fleet simulation environments utilized for evaluating and testing autonomy algorithms related to vehicle assignment, routing, and dispatch. The responsibilities involve unifying separate simulation elements into a streamlined, self-service platform that machine learning engineers and data scientists can utilize easily without specialized software backgrounds. Candidates will also establish evaluation standards, develop scalable tools, and cooperate with multiple teams to define the roadmap for simulation products.
This opportunity is ideal for software professionals experienced in designing complex system tools for broader user bases. The position operates on-site on a full-time schedule. Ideal candidates will possess a background in production-level programming, metric design, and collaborative development. While exact compensation figures are not detailed in the posting, the role places the chosen engineer among a multidisciplinary group working with valuable autonomous vehicle data assets.
Responsibilities
- Transform current fleet simulation pieces into a unified, self-service platform suitable for data scientists and machine learning engineers without requiring advanced software engineering knowledge
- Construct the connective tissue and fill operational gaps bridging data, simulation, and fleet orchestration algorithms
- Develop generalizable systems enabling teams to quantify the influence of orchestration algorithms on overall fleet efficiency
- Work alongside data science, machine learning, and fleet orchestration departments to define and prioritize the roadmap for simulation
- Set up standard methodologies and workflows concerning data-driven choices, evaluation, and simulation
Requirements
- Software engineering background in a production setting with proficiency in Python, or proven capability in acquiring new programming languages
- Background in creating tools, frameworks, or services that simplify complex system usage for non-expert users
- Knowledge of a version control system, with a preference for Git
- Background in formulating metrics and constructing systems that provide reliable, practical insights
- Strong collaboration and communication abilities
Qualifications
- Fundamental knowledge of C++ and/or Kotlin
- Background working with distributed systems and/or microservices
- Experience dealing with simulation or fleet orchestration involving routing, dispatch, and vehicle assignment
