Job Description
Stacklok is seeking a Software Engineer II to join the team developing Mecatl, a cloud-native agent harness designed to run AI agents as production workloads. Founded by industry veterans, Stacklok builds open-source and commercial infrastructure that combines agent execution with robust security, governance, and centralized controls. In this position, you will operate as part of an AI-first engineering team, utilizing autonomous agents throughout your own development lifecycle while building the platform that powers them.
This hands-on role offers significant independence and the opportunity to deliver features across the engine, client surfaces, Kubernetes-native runtime, and governance layers. You will tackle tasks ranging from bug fixes and harness hardening to writing design documents and reviewing pull requests. The ideal candidate brings a product engineering mindset, a personal AI-assisted development workflow, and a passion for creating reliable, secure infrastructure for enterprise AI.
Responsibilities
- Build and deliver features across the Mecatl platform, encompassing the agent loop, permission systems, tool management, session handling, client SDKs, and Kubernetes runtime
- Resolve bugs and harden the harness for production environments to improve security, reliability, and observability
- Draft clear technical design documents, write testable and readable code addressing edge cases, and review pull requests containing AI-assisted modifications
- Integrate AI agents deeply into your daily workflow while maintaining a critical eye on their outputs through thorough testing and verification
- Experiment with AI-assisted development practices to identify workflow bottlenecks and share structured findings with the team
Requirements
- Proficiency in Go for writing clean, testable code with proper error handling and edge-case management
- Demonstrated capability to independently deliver features through a backend or platform codebase from implementation to release
- Working knowledge of distributed systems and cloud-native infrastructure components such as containers, service APIs, and Kubernetes
- Familiarity with personal AI-assisted development workflows, along with an understanding of associated risks like prompt injection and excessive permissions
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for explaining complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
Qualifications
- Experience dealing with durable state, concurrency, or data streaming
- Interest or prior background in agent infrastructure including MCP, model providers, evaluation, or agent loops
- Past experience building upon or contributing to open-source projects or AI platforms
- Product engineering mindset focused on understanding users and questioning requirements
