Job Description

GitLab operates as an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, assisting organizations with enhancing developer efficiency, maximizing operational performance, mitigating security and compliance risks, and speeding up digital transformation. Over fifty million registered users and more than fifty percent of the Fortune 100 rely on GitLab to build secure software rapidly. The organization functions as an affirmative action and equal opportunity employer that hires based solely on merit.

The Nonlinear Productivity incubation group, operating directly under the sponsorship of the Chief Technology Officer, is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer for Architecture Engineering. This position serves as the technical anchor for a generalist team lacking a dedicated product manager, requiring independent ownership from day one. Team members collaborate with an India-based counterpart group a few times a week while managing greenfield technical foundations from the initial commit. This role suits engineers who thrive on defining brand-new architectures from scratch without an existing playbook.

Responsibilities

  • Establish the technical direction for agentic systems regarding orchestration and human-owned steps
  • Identify and prioritize software development lifecycle friction points to drive agentic or process-based fixes from hypothesis to shipped results
  • Modify any part of the codebase as a generalist across distributed systems
  • Apply distributed systems judgment to evaluate concurrency, scale, and deployment topologies including self-managed and multi-tenant environments
  • Mentor mid-level and senior engineers through design reviews and pair programming
  • Coordinate with the India-based team members multiple times weekly and report progress to the Chief Technology Officer organization
  • Participate in hiring by leading technical leadership evaluations for other Staff-level candidates
  • Manage a greenfield technical foundation starting on day one

Requirements

  • Experience building multi-step orchestration, tool use, guardrails, and recovery for reliable agentic or large language model systems
  • Ability to operate autonomously in unfamiliar codebases from discovery to completion
  • Strong distributed systems and computer science fundamentals covering coordination, consistency, idempotency, rate limiting, and failure modes
  • Proficiency in Go, Rust, or Python along with the ability to read and modify code written in the others
  • Demonstrated track record of delivering results from vague or incomplete requirements
  • Experience designing evaluation frameworks to determine actual correctness versus plausible appearance in systems

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Flexible paid time off
  • Team member resource groups
  • Equity compensation and employee stock purchase plan
  • Growth and development fund
  • Parental leave
