Hostaway is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to join a profitable, high-growth, and AI-powered platform designed for professional short-term rental operators. Operating fully remotely within Europe (EMEA), this role focuses on building a new trust accounting subsystem from scratch. As a founding technical member of this initiative, the engineer will define the architecture, technical vision, and standards for a financial system utilized by property managers globally.
This position is well-suited for an experienced software professional who excels at designing secure, scalable backend infrastructure and wants to shape critical financial operations. Responsibilities include setting up quality gates, driving engineering best practices, collaborating across departments, and mentoring team members.
Hostaway operates completely without a physical office, allowing staff to work remotely from their home or a co-working space anywhere in their country of residence within EMEA. Team members collaborate globally across more than 40 countries, contributing to a dynamic and international work culture.
Responsibilities
- Lead the greenfield development and own the architecture and technical vision for the V1 Trust Accounting product
- Design and implement core backend services for a secure, scalable, and auditable trust accounting subsystem
- Establish quality gates, testing protocols, and CI/CD integration to ensure feature correctness and reliability
- Drive organizational best practices for system design, observability, and security with a focus on financial accuracy
- Partner with product, design, finance, and legal teams to deliver a seamless and compliant product
- Raise the technical bar through code reviews, architectural guidance, and hands-on pairing with fellow engineers
Requirements
- Minimum of 8 years of software engineering experience
- At least 2 years operating at a Staff Engineer level or equivalent
- High proficiency in a backend language to build production-grade services
- Proven experience building, shipping, and operating critical backend systems serving real users at scale
- Strong architectural instincts to design evolving, extensible systems and balance trade-offs
- Experience leading through clarity and credibility to drive adoption of standards and platforms
- Familiarity with AWS, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and production operations
Qualifications
- Experience with accounting or ledger products and financial systems
- Hands-on production experience with Golang
