Job Description
Azul is hiring a remote, full-time Staff Compiler Performance Engineer to lead technical direction for Falcon, the optimizing just-in-time compiler in Azul Platform Prime. This position suits an experienced compiler professional who wants to shape performance strategy for a mature product running in production at major enterprises, rather than building a compiler from scratch or working on a front-end.
The person in this role will pinpoint major performance opportunities, guide the design of cross-cutting optimizations, and ensure the compiler architecture meets product roadmap goals. Working on a distributed team of compiler specialists, the engineer will serve as a senior technical voice and collaborate closely with runtime, garbage collection, and product teams, as well as represent Azul within the LLVM community.
Responsibilities
- Determine the performance strategy for Falcon by locating significant opportunities across benchmarks and customer workloads to build a technical roadmap.
- Spearhead the design of complex, cross-cutting optimizations within the optimizer, code generator, and system interfaces.
- Make architectural determinations regarding the optimization pipeline, tiering strategy, and compile-time budget.
- Drive the enablement of Falcon across new hardware platforms and upcoming Azul products.
- Guide senior engineers, evaluate critical code and designs, and establish benchmarks for performance validation and methodology.
- Engage with the LLVM community to steer upstream design discussions and contributions that aid managed language compilers.
Requirements
- Have at least 8 years of professional experience building optimizing or JIT compilers.
- Demonstrate a history of technical leadership through the ownership of major compiler components or production optimization frameworks.
- Possess expert C++ abilities and practical experience working within large, long-running codebases.
- Bring profound knowledge of code generation and compiler optimization, understanding the balances between peak performance, warmup, code size, and compile time.
- Show expert-level performance analysis capabilities down to the microarchitecture level.
Qualifications
- Hold recognized contributions to LLVM or another primary compiler as an author of major upstream work, maintainer, or code owner.
- Possess extensive background with managed language JIT compilers such as Graal, HotSpot C2, V8, or .NET RyuJIT.
- Have experience collaborating alongside runtime and garbage collection teams concerning barrier design, deoptimization, and speculation.
