Job Description
Pleo is hiring a Staff Engineer for its Business Spend segment, the part of the company that builds invoices, purchase orders, supplier invoices and subscription cards, and that supports procure-to-pay services as the company grows. The person will own the architecture of the segment alongside the Engineering Manager and work with the accounting systems and card infrastructure teams.
Pleo builds spend management software intended to make managing money simpler for finance teams and employees. It reports more than 40,000 customers and a workforce above 850 spanning over 100 nationalities, and it has been operating for about ten years. The role can be remote, hybrid or in person in any listed location, but candidates must live in their chosen country with the right to work there.
Priorities include taking supplier and bank-account logic off an older service with no downtime, improving invoice payment reliability where roughly 2.5 percent of payments currently fail, and rebuilding the vendor data model so a supplier record has one meaning whether it is used for cards, invoices or accounting. The Staff Engineer also steers three teams toward consistent technical calls via design docs, code review and an architecture forum. The tech stack includes AWS, Kotlin, Kafka, Spring Boot, Kubernetes and Grafana, with TypeScript and React on the frontend. The posting states that candidates need extensive experience as a technical lead or initiative owner in SaaS organizations of 500 or more people, and asks those without that experience not to apply.
Responsibilities
- Own the architecture of Business Spend together with the Engineering Manager
- Lead major parts of the supplier data migration, pulling supplier and bank account logic from the old service into a dedicated one without downtime
- Improve the reliability of invoice payment flows, where about 2.5 percent of payments currently fail
- Make the new vendor data model work in software, so suppliers are consistent across cards, invoices and accounting
- Steer three teams toward consistent technical calls via design docs, code review and an architecture forum
- Help colleagues grow via pairing, peer review and clear written handovers
Requirements
- Strong verbal communication and the ability to lead engineers who do not share a first language
- Prior experience as a technical lead over people in multiple countries and time zones
- Substantial server-side engineering in a statically typed language like Java, Kotlin or TypeScript, with production systems at scale
- Proof of delivering changes within an old system that is being dismantled, including carrying out the migration
- Can steer direction across groups you do not manage, backed by concrete examples
- Clear written output (design docs, decision logs, migration plans) that others can act on
- Extensive experience as a technical lead or owner of initiatives with cross-team impact in SaaS organizations of 500 or more people
- Work history designing services that span several domains and untangling complicated legacy systems on a long-term plan
Qualifications
- Exposure to payments, financial technology, accounts payable, ERP or business-to-business software
- Hands-on time with Kafka and event-based architectures, plus a habit of instrumenting what you release
