Quora operates two primary platforms: a global knowledge-sharing website centered on user insights, and Poe, a cloud workspace for running multiple AI agents. The organization functions as a remote-first entity with a global team structure centered on autonomy and experimentation.
The company seeks a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to shape the technological roadmap of the Quora recommendation ecosystem. This individual will direct feed ranking and retrieval, spearhead major modeling initiatives, and incorporate generative models and large language models into content understanding. Beyond the main feed, the position scales recommendation channels like digests and notifications while building internal tooling.
This is a hands-on individual contributor role with broad organizational impact, requiring production coding, technical leadership, and mentorship. Candidates must be available for collaboration during coordination hours from Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM Pacific Time.
Responsibilities
- Determine the technical roadmap for home feed recommendation systems
- Direct major projects spanning retrieval, candidate generation, ranking, re-ranking, and optimization
- Execute online experiments to enhance user engagement and content quality
- Manage machine learning architectures end-to-end, including data pipelines, feature engineering, training, and production integration
- Discover new use cases for machine learning across the platform
- Collaborate with infrastructure, product, and data science colleagues
- Mentor engineering peers and champion coding standards and AI-assisted development
Requirements
- Available for communication during coordination hours from Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm Pacific Time
- Minimum of 6 years of professional software engineering experience focusing on machine learning
- At least 4 years of professional background creating and tuning Home Feed recommendation mechanisms for social media or user-generated content networks
- Extensive familiarity with the complete recommender architecture, encompassing retrieval, candidate generation, ranking, re-ranking, embeddings, and optimization
- Solid understanding of the mathematical principles behind machine learning models
- Track record of steering large-scale machine learning initiatives from inception to completion with verifiable results
- Demonstrated interpersonal and communication capabilities
- Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, or Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science
Qualifications
- Six or more years of practice writing Python or C++ code
- Practical background in launching and operating generative models at scale
- Experience working with lifecycle modeling, growth, email recommendations, or notifications
- Published research in academic venues such as KDD, RecSys, NeurIPS, or ICML
