The company seeks a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to shape the technical roadmap for its recommendation ecosystem, focusing specifically on the Quora platform. This individual contributor position involves directing feed retrieval and ranking strategies, executing major modeling initiatives, and integrating generative models to improve content discovery. Beyond the home feed, the role scales recommendation channels like digests and notifications while building organizational tools. Responsibilities include writing production code, mentoring team members, and advancing AI-assisted development workflows.
Responsibilities
- Determine the technical strategy for home feed recommendation systems
- Lead major initiatives across the recommender stack, spanning retrieval, ranking, and multi-objective optimization
- Execute online experiments to enhance user engagement and content standards
- Maintain complete ownership of machine learning systems from data pipelines to production deployment
- Discover new applications for machine learning throughout the Quora product
- Collaborate with data science, product, and infrastructure departments to harmonize priorities
- Mentor engineering personnel and establish strong standards for code quality and modeling
Requirements
- Availability for communication during coordination hours from Monday through Friday between 9 AM and 3 PM Pacific Time
- Minimum of 6 years of professional software development background in machine learning
- Minimum of 4 years of professional experience creating and optimizing home feed recommendation systems for user-generated content or social media platforms
- Expertise in the complete recommender stack including candidate generation, retrieval, ranking, and embeddings
- Comprehension of the mathematical principles behind machine learning algorithms
- Demonstrated experience leading large-scale machine learning projects end-to-end with tangible results
- Strong interpersonal and communication abilities
- Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, or Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science
Qualifications
- Minimum of 6 years of experience programming in Python or C++
- Practical background in deploying and operating generative models at scale
- Familiarity with lifecycle modeling, growth, notifications, or email recommendations
- Adaptable and collaborative team player attitude
- Published research in venues such as KDD, NeurIPS, ICML, or RecSys
- Enthusiasm for the mission and objectives of Quora
