Job Description

Ethos, a life insurance technology company traded on Nasdaq as $LIFE, operates a platform designed to simplify how families acquire life insurance through instant products requiring no medical exams. The company is currently hiring a Staff Site Reliability Engineer to act as a technical leader within its United States reliability organization.

This senior, hands-on individual contributor position collaborates closely with engineering leadership in both the United States and Bangalore to establish multi-quarter technical strategies. The chosen candidate will shape how production systems are built, scaled, and maintained across core AWS and Kubernetes infrastructure, as well as internal toolchains supporting artificial intelligence initiatives. Responsibilities span designing critical cloud infrastructure, guiding product teams on reliability best practices, handling high-severity incidents, and spearheading cloud spend optimization initiatives.

The role suits an experienced engineer with a strong background in software development, distributed systems, and platform operations who wants to lead complex engineering initiatives without authority, mentor team members, and build self-service platforms that streamline developer productivity.

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive multi-quarter technical strategies for infrastructure, platform tooling, and reliability aligned with company objectives
  • Design complex, cross-cutting infrastructure systems and author or review technical specifications
  • Advise product engineering teams on production readiness and reliability best practices
  • Mentor site reliability engineers across United States and Bangalore teams through code reviews, pairing, and design evaluations
  • Establish frameworks for defining and measuring service level indicators, objectives, and error budgets
  • Lead high-severity incident responses, blameless post-mortems, and recurrence reduction efforts
  • Manage capacity planning, disaster recovery, and failure-mode testing
  • Operate and scale cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code, Kubernetes, and GitOps workflows
  • Architect and build governed gateways for AI model routing with secure data connectors and access controls
  • Lead organizational FinOps initiatives to optimize cloud expenditure and manage large language model token costs
  • Build internal tools, continuous integration pipelines, and self-service platforms to eliminate toil for product teams

Requirements

  • Possess ten or more years of full-time software engineering experience in site reliability, infrastructure, platform, DevOps, or backend engineering
  • Demonstrate a track record of leading complex, multi-team reliability or infrastructure initiatives from ambiguity to delivery
  • Hold strong coding skills in Golang, Python, or TypeScript
  • Bring deep hands-on experience working with Amazon Web Services, Kubernetes, and Terraform
  • Understand distributed systems, PostgreSQL, continuous integration and deployment systems, and DataDog observability tooling
  • Have hands-on experience implementing service level agreements, managing incident response, and executing post-mortems

Qualifications

  • Experience building Kubernetes operators
  • Background building or operating large language model toolchains, model routing, and governance frameworks including personally identifiable information scanning and audit trails
  • Demonstrated experience leading cloud cost optimization or usage metering systems
  • Prior work within regulated industries such as insurance, fintech, or healthcare, or familiarity with compliance frameworks like SOC 2
  • Experience collaborating with globally distributed engineering teams
