Job Description
CodePath is a prominent nonprofit computer science educator that has trained tens of thousands of university students and recently established a major artificial intelligence initiative alongside Anthropic. The organization is expanding its team to scale its educational programs and transform technical talent development. In this full-time role, a Staff Software Engineer will lead technical decision-making and product execution on the organization's proprietary learning platform.
This position suits an experienced web engineer who wants to own projects from conception to completion rather than working through a standard ticket queue. The platform operates on Ruby-based applications supporting admissions, course delivery, grading, and career coaching. The engineer will work fluidly across the technology stack, handle greenfield product development, migrate legacy components from Sinatra to Rails, and integrate AI and machine learning tools for adaptive learning.
The role reports directly to the Vice President of Engineering and operates on a remote basis across the United States, Canada, Europe, or Latin America. Candidates should possess extensive software engineering expertise, particularly with Ruby on Rails, and a strong background in systems thinking and database design.
Responsibilities
- Design and construct web applications utilizing Ruby on Rails, Sinatra or Padrino, and Django to support the organizational mission.
- Drive consequential technical decisions regarding infrastructure, data modeling, API design, and new technologies while owning tradeoffs.
- Establish code quality standards through architectural guidance, reviews, and constructive feedback.
- Create automated tests that target real edge cases beyond baseline coverage requirements.
- Detect systemic issues and performance bottlenecks prior to service outages.
- Mentor fellow engineers to elevate the overall technical capacity of the team.
Requirements
- Ten or more years of software engineering background.
- At least five years of professional experience using Ruby on Rails.
- Familiarity with Claude Code or comparable development tools alongside best practices.
- Systems-thinking mindset focused on scalability, failure modes, and maintainability.
- Proficiency in PostgreSQL and database design, including schema evolution, indexing, and complex queries.
- Working familiarity with the complete web stack from infrastructure to CSS.
- Proven capability to guide technical choices within a small, autonomous team.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to explain technical tradeoffs to non-engineers.
Qualifications
- Passion for education and creating positive societal impact.
- Familiarity with edtech or higher education environments.
- Direct production experience working with generative AI and large language models.
- Familiarity with Docker, Terraform, or Ansible.
- Experience deploying applications on Google Cloud Platform.
