Harness is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join its Software Engineering Insights division, focusing on products built by engineers for engineers. The company provides an AI Software Delivery Platform that helps organizations streamline their outer development loop, incorporating automation, security, reliability, and cost tracking into software delivery.
In this role, the engineer will work within a Java environment to connect over 40 developer tools—such as GitHub and Jira—processing large volumes of event data to convert raw development metrics into actionable insights. The position involves designing scalable backend solutions, creating technical specifications, diagnosing distributed computing challenges, and taking full ownership of critical system components.
This opportunity is ideal for professionals with extensive experience in distributed application development who enjoy tackling complex challenges in data modeling, systems design, and cloud integrations. The role operates on a remote basis in the United States or within the Bay Area, and requires periodic travel.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, deploy, and maintain backend software within a Java technology stack
- Author functional specifications and design documentation for new features
- Own key system pieces and ensure high delivered quality
- Collaborate in agile teams utilizing iterative development cycles and short feedback loops
- Build scalable backend software solutions and troubleshoot complex issues in distributed environments
- Conduct peer reviews for code, designs, and specifications
- Partner with site reliability engineers, DevOps personnel, and cross-functional teams to release software and resolve production issues
Requirements
- 8 to 10 years or more of professional experience building highly scalable, distributed applications, products, and backend services utilizing Java
- Demonstrated ability to create products that resolve complex technical problems for end users
- Familiarity with relational database technologies such as PostgreSQL and MySQL
- Thorough understanding of how distributed, resilient software systems are built and deployed
- Strong problem-solving and debugging capabilities
- Background working in rapid release cycles
Qualifications
- Experience with SQL query tuning and performance optimizations
- Familiarity with search frameworks like Elasticsearch or SOLR
- Experience working with cloud applications hosted on platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP
- Familiarity with Docker and continuous integration and continuous deployment processes
