Job Description
Method products pbc, a global design and engineering consultancy and part of Hitachi Digital, is seeking a remote Staff Software Engineer to join a small team serving a non-profit client in the energy sector. In this role, you will build software that helps electrical engineers make decisions regarding electrical grid growth. Your core duties will involve processing large planning datasets, creating and securing APIs, handling multi-system authentication, managing CI/CD pipelines, and directly collaborating with domain experts to translate operational challenges into technical specifications. The position requires a candidate with strong problem-solving abilities, a broad technical range, and comfort working independently before bringing options to the team. While the core backend technology is Java with Spring Boot, the company values your capacity for rapid learning over preexisting stack familiarity and encourages the use of AI-assisted development tools.
The ideal candidate possesses at least six years of backend and API development experience, a history of picking up new domains quickly, and strong communication skills. Travel for client and team meetings may be necessary up to 15 percent of the time.
Responsibilities
- Design, construct, and maintain backend services and APIs using Java and Spring Boot for electrical transmission planning
- Handle batch job orchestration and move large volumes of grid planning data between systems safely
- Implement security measures, authentication protocols, and access controls across services
- Manage deployments, environments, CI/CD pipelines, logging, and system observability
- Consult directly with client electrical engineers to transform domain needs into functional technical requirements
- Evaluate options independently before presenting recommendations and trade-offs to the team
- Leverage AI development tools to increase speed while validating and testing all generated output
- Mentor team members and share domain knowledge
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience building backend systems and APIs, with Java and Spring Boot strongly preferred
- Proven ability to quickly learn and become productive in new languages, codebases, and domains
- Strong problem-solving and self-guided investigation skills
- Strong communication capabilities to explain technical concepts to non-software experts
- Broad technical knowledge spanning APIs, data management, security, and infrastructure
- Familiarity with RESTful principles, OpenAPI, Swagger, and Postman
- Experience with API security standards such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and role-based access control
- Experience managing relational databases and data-heavy workloads
- DevOps experience including cloud platforms, metrics, logging, and GitHub Actions
- Hands-on practice using AI-assisted development tools responsibly
- Background in agile development methodologies, version control, and continuous integration
Qualifications
- Experience within the energy or utility industry
- Familiarity with power systems or electrical grid concepts like transmission planning, power flow, or generation interconnection
- Proficiency in Python
- Experience with React and TypeScript for user interface development
- Familiarity with containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes
Core Skills
Benefits
- Continuing education opportunities
- Flexible paid time off and work-from-home policies
- 401(k) matching
