Job Description
Dremio is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to join its Connectivity team and build high-performance solutions that integrate data into the unified lakehouse platform for self-service analytics and AI. This role involves taking independent ownership of multiple medium-to-large features or service components, shaping team-area scopes, and guiding work from concept through reliable production delivery. The engineer will design scalable and maintainable systems across client drivers, protocols, connectors, and distributed services, while also diagnosing complex failures, maintaining API and protocol stability, and contributing to compatibility and reliability.
This position is suited for an experienced engineer with deep expertise in areas such as JDBC or ODBC drivers, Apache Arrow ADBC, Arrow Flight SQL, BI interoperability, or source connectivity. The professional will collaborate across product, query execution, QA, support, and SRE functions, while mentoring colleagues and employing approved AI-assisted tools responsibly. Dremio provides an open lakehouse architecture based on open source technologies like Apache Iceberg and Apache Arrow, serving a global enterprise customer base.
Responsibilities
- Lead multiple medium-to-large features or service components from problem definition to operational handoff
- Translate ambiguous goals into concrete execution plans with reviewable milestones, estimates, and risk assessments
- Produce technical designs and architecture diagrams while making service-level decisions across drivers, protocols, and client libraries
- Perform root-cause analysis on complex failures spanning client, server, protocol, network, and distributed system boundaries
- Maintain API and protocol stability while establishing automated coverage for compatibility, performance, and reliability
- Collaborate with product, QA, support, SRE, and documentation teams to resolve dependencies and elevate customer experience
- Participate in code and design reviews, mentor team members, and contribute to relevant upstream open-source projects
- Utilize approved AI-assisted development tools for debugging, testing, and code comprehension while safeguarding proprietary data
Requirements
- Have at least 8 years of professional software engineering experience or equivalent depth owning complex systems
- Demonstrate deep proficiency in a systems or services language such as Java, C++, Rust, or Go
- Possess hands-on experience designing and debugging APIs, protocols, client libraries, drivers, or distributed services
- Show strong capability in solving non-obvious problems across distributed system and client-server boundaries
- Bring experience building comprehensive testing suites and working with production CI/CD, packaging, and quality controls
Qualifications
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or possess equivalent practical experience
- Experience developing database drivers including JDBC, ODBC, or ADBC
- Familiarity with Apache Arrow or Arrow Flight SQL
- Background working with SQL engines, databases, data platforms, or source connectors
- Experience with BI interoperability tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Excel
- Knowledge of enterprise authentication, OAuth, OIDC, TLS, metadata discovery, or query pushdown
- Familiarity with cross-platform native builds, release engineering, and upgrade support
- Experience handling observability, production diagnostics, customer escalations, or long-running data transfers
- Prior contributions to Apache Arrow or related open-source projects
