Job Description
Dremio is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join its Connectivity team. The organization provides a unified lakehouse platform for analytics and artificial intelligence, utilizing open-source technologies such as Apache Iceberg and Apache Arrow. In this role, you will independently manage multiple features or service components, establishing technical direction and guiding projects from initial design through to production release.
This position fits professionals who possess extensive systems engineering expertise and want to build high-performance connectivity solutions that link data ecosystems to the platform. You will handle complex technical challenges spanning protocols, client drivers, and distributed services while collaborating closely with product, quality assurance, support, and engineering teams. The group values individuals who can clarify ambiguous goals, design scalable systems, and mentor colleagues.
Responsibilities include leading service components, performing root-cause analysis on challenging failures, maintaining API and protocol stability, and applying approved artificial intelligence tools responsibly to assist with debugging and testing. You will also participate in peer code reviews and contribute to upstream open-source projects where appropriate.
Responsibilities
- Lead multiple medium-to-large features or service components through the complete lifecycle from definition to operational handoff
- Translate complex goals into actionable execution plans with defined milestones and risk assessments
- Produce architectural diagrams and technical designs across client libraries, connectors, and protocols
- Investigate and resolve intricate failures across network, protocol, client-server, and distributed system boundaries
- Maintain API and protocol stability while creating comprehensive test coverage for performance, scale, and interoperability
- Collaborate with internal groups and external technology partners to improve customer experience and supportability
- Mentor and coach engineers while contributing to team practices and relevant upstream open-source projects
- Utilize approved internal artificial intelligence development tools for documentation, testing, and debugging
Requirements
- Minimum of 8 years of production software engineering experience or equivalent sustained ownership of complex systems
- Strong proficiency in a systems language such as Java, C++, Rust, or Go
- Background in designing and debugging APIs, client libraries, protocols, drivers, or distributed services
- Knowledge of concurrency, data structures, asynchronous programming, networking, and failure handling
- Demonstrated capability to solve non-obvious issues across distributed systems and produce durable fixes
- Experience developing automated testing for unit, integration, compatibility, and reliability
- Clear communication skills with the ability to explain technical trade-offs and influence without authority
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
- Advanced degrees and relevant industry experience
- Background building database drivers including JDBC, ODBC, or ADBC
- Familiarity with Apache Arrow or Arrow Flight SQL
- Experience working with SQL engines, data platforms, databases, or source connectors
- Business intelligence interoperability experience involving tools like Tableau, Power BI, or Excel
- Familiarity with enterprise authentication, OAuth, OIDC, TLS, metadata discovery, or query pushdown
- Cross-platform native build, release engineering, and compatibility certification experience
- Prior contributions to Apache Arrow or other open-source projects
