Deliveroo now belongs to DoorDash. This team sits in the Foundations group of DoorDash's Platform Engineering function and owns developer environments across the DoorDash family of companies, which supports more than 5,000 engineers.
The Dev Environments team reduces friction in the everyday developer cycle: launching a working environment, getting code to build, and getting feedback fast. The developer might be a person or an AI agent. This Staff Engineer role is the recognised expert in local and remote development flows, devcontainers, remote IDE back ends and how they fit together. The engineer sets technical direction, resolves deep cross-cutting problems, and mentors senior and mid-level engineers.
Work involves defining how engineers build and ship code, provisioning production-like environments quickly, making remote machines feel local, and building sandboxes that AI agents can use safely. The role also connects teams that rarely work side by side, such as Security, Infrastructure and Product Engineering. London is the listed location. Experience needed includes Go, Python or TypeScript, Terraform, Kubernetes, cloud networking and integrating AI coding tools. Devcontainers, JetBrains remote backends, Codespaces-style products or BuildBuddy are a plus.
Responsibilities
- Define the architecture for dev containers, remote IDE lifecycles plus the whole local-to-remote path
- Build monorepo developer tooling that serves thousands of engineers
- Design AI agent sandboxes that can run side by side and handle real repositories safely
- Connect Security, Infrastructure and Product Engineering on open-ended problems
- Run design reviews and raise the bar through code review and pairing
- Lead interview loops and help onboard senior hires
Requirements
- Proven delivery of production platforms and group-wide cross-team programmes work
- Fluency in Go, Python or TypeScript and infrastructure-as-code with Terraform
- Experience with Kubernetes, or lightweight VM and sandbox tools such as Firecracker
- Familiarity with cloud networking such as VPNs and service meshes
- Experience embedding LLM and AI coding tools in developer workflows
- Strong communication and influence without formal authority
Qualifications
- Experience with devcontainers, remote development or workstation tooling
- Practical use of JetBrains remote backends or Codespaces-style products
- Experience with build execution systems such as BuildBuddy or distributed caching
